tried to install an earlier version of Directx
(windows 8.1 wouldnt allow that) and spent hours
looking through posts on steam and cannot find

Your GPUs under the minimum and your latest installed GPU drivers are 2 1/2 years old.

ACTIVISION better be working around the clock to get a patch out, none of the recommended fixes work.

OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (6.1, Build 7601)
Processor: Intel i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHZ
Memory: 11264MB RAM
DirectX Version: DirectX 11
GPU: Nvidia GTX 260 (2gb version)
GPU Driver: Most recent as of 11/4/2014

The DirectX Encountered an Unrecoverable Error

Fix1

If your machine checks out it’s likely that you’re getting this error because of your display settings

Right click your desktop

Choose “screen resolution”

Click “Make text and other items larger or smaller”

In Windows 7 make this 100% or smaller. In Windows 8 drag the toggle all the way to the left (smaller)

Reboot your machine and launch the game. Voila, you’ve just fixed the DirectX has encountered an unrecoverable error.

Fix2

Harddrive D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Call of Duty Advanced Warfare

click on both the .exe files, go to properties, then on the compatibility tab

check “disable display scaling on high DPI…”

this worked for me :)

Hey man I tried doing this, but when I got to the compatibly tab it wouldn't allow me to check off any of the settings.

Looks like your GPU doesn't support DX11, if so you're screwed. You need a card which can run dx11

it will never fix it for you as a 260gtx is 4 years old and a directx10 card and cannot play this game.

DX11 is a hardware requirement girls and guys........ You can have DX11 installed but if your gpu doesn't support it, it won't work.

Solved, Next....

It maybe installed, but we need to know what graphics card you are using. Is it Nvidia or AMD?
You can find out by doing this: Help > System Information.

we need your dedicated graphics card number
Captain Obvious Dec 13, 2014 @ 3:50am
And again, DX11 is not only the software requirement, your hardware ( your graphics card or gpu ) needs to support DX11......

So if DX11 is installed on your pc / laptop it doesn't mean your gpu supports it.
