How does unit obsolence work? Seems broken in some aspects.
Playing as the US in the 2028 on a Sandbox. The AI minister seems to have gone through and toggled every strategic bomber as obsolete, disregarding the fact the Air Force is planning to use the B-52H through 2060. This is my 2nd playthrough, and again, as soon as research completes, the B-21 is rendered obsolete as well.

Beyond the bug of why the aircraft was rendered obsolete immediately (whilst at the same time recommending research on airframes from the 60s...), this may be handled better via minister notification.

a) It could prompt you as to whether you agreed w/ the decision
b) and if you do, and have active units, it could suggest an upgrade or let you provide one. This would go a long ways to improving arms race functionality imo.

Lastly, any chance light infantry can be a refit option to light infantry ii? Seeems LI would be obsolete at that point

Research is one of those things better done yourself. Prevents the AI from wasting rss on things that might not fit what you’re looking to do. For example, researching patrol ships as Rwanda instead of ground and air forces.

The "obsolete" flag is applied based on the value set in the equipment list. Not all units have been assigned obsolete values (there are over 7000 entries in the equipment file).

Internally the game has a "tech level" for every region. If the tech level > the obsolete date, it's filtered out.

There is also a "replaced by" system. If unit X has the ID of unit Y for the replaced by value, then when you research Y, the game will hide X.

You can turn of (make visible) replaced units in the game options.
