If not, just try hitting the mouse 1 button just as the enemy starts to swing, it should work. I have fought enemy and have managed to pull off the riposte when the marker hasn't changed a lot of times. It's just a case of timing. Once you get into the combat in the game you mostly won't need the marker anyway.
If not, just ignore the tutorial, it doesn't really have anything to do with the game anyway. Perhaps go into the arena and play on easy, and try the riposte move there. But you have to level up to get it, which means fighting a couple of rounds first. But it's a good way to get you used to fighting different enemy types, and large groups of enemy.
Problem is the combat in this game is VERY hard. I ended up playing the first chapter on easy the first time I played, because I was just getting thrashed. I NEVER play games on easy, but I was enjoying the game so much but just getting frustrated with the combat so I swallowed my pride and went easy, and it really helped me.
So try arena on easy to learn the game mechanics of the tutorial doesn't work. Or just play the prologue, that has tips and stuff for fighting and signs and stuff anyway, it's just not nearly as thorough as the tutorial.
ripost part in tutorial, suggest run around a bit to fill up the two brown slots, as blocking depletes one of them and likely u need the energy to activate the ripost skill after next block.
If you just keep blocking (E) without any energy in the two brown bars, the ripost crit never seems to show up; but get those two bars filled, much better chance at getting the ripost crit to activate.
It's a common misconception in the tutorial that you're supposed to riposte AFTER the npc attacks you, but yeah that's not how it works, its during the npc's first swing at you right before they even connect with you when the marker shows up and you need to be holding E before they start attacking you.
As people have already mentioned, the riposte icon appears before the enemy attacks, however if you start parrying too late it will not appear. I was under the impression that I had to start parrying right before the enemy attacks, but I can actually just stand there, hold E and wait all day long until he attacks and it works the same.
Therefore: stand still -> hold E all day long -> and when the enemy attacks, you'll see the riposte icon
