The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition

How the hell do you parry/riposte.
The tutorial is beyond wrong. E uses my magic. I've never played this before. I downloaded the FCR mod b/c from waht I read it merely improves combat and what not so playing vanilla first seemed unneccesary, but as far as i know it doesn't change the default controls. I want to like the witcher series but Witcher 1 combat is terrible, never made it past Ch.1, and apparently there is something wrong with the control scheme for W2. I'm just very annoyed, help.

You should probably play it normally once, at least to learn the basic controls. FCR2 is a mod, therefore you can't expect it to be friendly to new players. The tutorial is for the normal game and is not changed for the mod. If you want to know what the mod changes you should read the change log.

The FCR2 mod changes the combat mechanics and gameplay balance quite a bit. To answer your question - you can't - Parry is random and automatic, you can't riposte, and block ( E ) is now Quen sign.

You can riposte in FCR2. It's done the same as before (that is, you attack when the icon appears but without having to hold 'e') but its animation has been changed. You just need the first skill in the sword tree.

yeah, blocking is done automatically in FCR, with a like 25% chance, so ripose happens naturally after you autoblock. I don't like it, think its kinda dumb tbh, but thats how flash changed it.
Should I play through vanilla first? Or is FCR enough of an improvement to begin there?

the mod changes the game completely, not just combat.

So yes, the tutorial would kinda suck with it.

I would say play it normally the first time. The mod is too buggy to use for a first playthrough, although I would probably recommend this even after they're patched out. Be careful thinking it's an improvement; it's mainly just different. The main point of the mod is to bring combat more in line with what is described in the books.

Well, I'm playing on dark mode with the mod and Im getting my ass kicked. The mod improves the combat, however, the defence system is eh.

I'd say go ahead and play the game without the mod. You can go ahead and give the mod a try on a later playthrough. The mod makes combat much more difficult and certain elements ( defence) are left to blind luck.

I'm playing with the mod on my first real playthrough, although I have tried the normal combat. I'm enjoying the mod quite a lot now, though I hated it at first. Once you realise the combat is a rolling simulator more than a combat simulator, you'll be fine!

Lol, the mod was supposed to make combat more enjoyable and eliminate the excessive rolling. You can roll 24/7 and cast signs but Gerald is supposed to be a badass not a kitty.

im playing through for the first time with the combat mod and its fine, does take a little while to get hang of. i was also wondering why i couldnt reposte properly.. even in the tute.
Tnx for the answers. Just started my first vanilla playthrough.

So basically the riposte works, but requires a skill you don't have during that step of the tutorial? It'll be okay during the real game?

I'm guessing that you are using the combat mod? It's a tutorial, the skill should work regardless. With the combat mode the chance to rip is random. I don't recommend using the mod on your first run through it. The blocking rate is rather low and you have very lil control over it.

If you don't have the mod - during the game, whenever you block in time you'll have an window of opportunity to react (can't remember the key) with an riposte when you've got the skill for it. Ripostes can be pretty deadly, but beware - in case you mistime it (it's possible), you'll take an hit just like you had no weapon equipped.
