The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition

The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition

Can't load game/Saves have disappeared
Hi, I recently purchased The Witcher 2: enhanced edition on steam. Everything was going fine, I was really enjoying the game and it was running great on my pc on the high setting. However today when I tried to launch the game it started giving me errors saying the launcher crashed, then when I restarted steam, it started but gave me the 1st time set up bug (which I gather is quite common). I thought ok, no big deal and started playing, but the game crashed on the continue screen when I died after I had been playing for around 30 mins. I ended the game via task manager, restarted my pc and when I started the game up again and went to load game, I was horrified to find that my saves had somehow disappeared! I checked my saved game files (c/user/me/my documents/witcher2/gamesaves) and they are all still there, the game just isn't recognizing them anymore for some reason.

Needless to say I am pretty salty about this as it came completely out of the blue and seemed to happen for no discernible reason. I've been looking around various forums all day and have seen some (fairly old) threads describing a similar problem but no actual solutions. Any ideas?

P.s. I don't think steam cloud was enabled seeing as the saved games are on my pc.

Try disabling steam cloud syncing in-game (after you "Launch"). It's under options.

When I enabled this option all my local save files dissapeared. Whe disabled they reappeard. Does that help? I know it's in your p.s. statement but maybe you are syncing out of game or something...

1/ Disable steam cloud (if you cant launch your game to disable steam cloud, cut your internet access)

2/ Search in STEAM folder for :

\Steam\userdata\xxxxxx\20920\remote

Where xxxx should be the identical number indicates your steam account.
20920 should be Witcher 2 steam ID code.

3/ Inside remote folder there are save files.

4/ Move most of your old save files to a backup folder. (keep the newest save files as it should be your recent play)

5/ Game should load normally.

I think that:( THIS IS JUST MY SPECULATION)

The problem lies in bad coding of how save files work. For example, the flash back of Gerald in game Main Menu is mainly determined by the contents of your save game. As the result, when you access to that part of Main Menu, the game try to read all save files to search for unlocked flashback --> thus slower the whole process since there might me lots of save files.

At some point it impossible to load all save files at once to check, thus making it fails to load.

The reason Steam cloud should be disabled is: to prevent all of your save files to be redownloaded again.
Dont worry, you wont miss your in game achievement as playing in offline mode still recording such data.

More over, I heard that this problem mostly in Win7, Win8, multi core CPU.

This is more easily remedied by going to My Documents/Witcher 2/Config/User.ini and changing CloudStorage=true to CloudStorage=false. This will load your savegames from local files rather than the cloud.

I did that, and everytime i launch the game, its re-enables it.

Thanks, worked perfectly :P
My saves totally disappeared from documents\witcher 2\saves folder after i patched with the latest patches neither i can find any \Steam\userdata\xxxxxx\20920\remote in the steam folder which is in another partition than windows 7. Also there is NO steam cloud saves option in the out of game menu neither in the in-game options menu.

I fixed this by deleting previous saves. I had to search a while since I had various id's. When in 'user data' search through the files till you find '20920' then click 'remote'. Your save files should be in there. I recommend sorting the folder by date then deleting the files towards the bottom.
