It's semi-open world. Each chapter of the game is a seperate map, but within each you're free to explore and do missions as you please. Total size is maybe 1/4 the size of Skyrim, and that's broken into maybe 4 major maps you visit sequentially as you go through the story.

If you've played Mass Effect 2, picture something like how the major maps there work (Citadel, Omega, Illium, etc) , only you visit them in strict sequence instead of being able to travel freely between. Or like Seattle and Hengsha in Deus Ex: HR, only if you only ever went on to a new map instead of revisiting those maps.
