Three Little Sisters

I am somewhat confused and disappointed by this quest. After the spectre accuses the soldier I went to see him and ask him about it. He got all mad and apparently went to kill the spectre himself. I tried to intercept him, talk him out of it, nothing. One moment the beach is quiet, the next - torn up soldier and stupid river demon. Well, I beat up the demon, get some nice loot and the quest marked as failed.
I kind of knew something was awry, but I'd just liked some information from the soldier. Having him go to his unavoidable death just for asking a question seems so arbitrary. Also the story still doesn't seem to add up.
So we have the old quack and his daughters. But who is this muron that is also burried in the cemetary? Well anyways the quack apparently is also secretly a mage and has dealing with some kind of river demon. And apparently his daughters get raped and he kills them because he can't deal with the shame. Apparently he also goes on to kill himself then.
And the father of the soldier (maverick) apparently also had dealings with the same river demon? And sold out his kids? And maverick gets posted to that hut out of mere coincidence? Or is maverick the brother of the raped and murdered sisters and somehow doesn't know?

Also I wonder how to "correctly" solve the quest. Just go "stoopid spectre, die!" the first time you meet him? Seems counterintuitive. Shouldn't a game usually reward you for doing investigations instead of bringing out the sword at the first opportunity?

The soldier who went to kill the spectre by himself is a sibling to the three sisters and the mage was his father. To correctly solve the quest, you have to make sure that the soldier lives.

Yep, I'm disappointed too. For me there were only two ways: Just kiling the specter or ask Maverick to find out more. To ask him leads to both the specter and the questlog/Dandelion saying that I believed her and it's my fault.. I didn't believe anything, I just wanted to find out more.
