Okay so. A couple of generations ago, an elven sorceress named Larra Dorren with super powerful magic abilities had a daughter with a mighty human mage. Their union was very controversial and considered blasphemy for both races. She then went mad for some reason and died. Her powers, considered to be the most powerful abilities the world has ever known, passed on to all of her descendants due to the special blood they are carrying. This blood was called Elder Blood. The blood contains all of the strenght of the powers of Larra Dorren. If not under control, these powers would have incredible consequences and the thing is, these powers are actually super difficult to keep under control. If I'm not mistaken, one of the descendant destroyed an entire castle with one mighty blow she didn't intend to do when she was in her cell. Can't confirmed that though, I just heard it. So don't take my word for that part.
Alright here comes Geralt, Ciri and Yennefer. Ciri, is a descendant of Larra Dorren. She possesses Elder Blood. Which mean that her powers are super mega strong. In her childhood, her parents were killed by a mage named Vilgefortz . Vilgefortz sunk the boat they were on. They were then presumably lost in a sea storm. Her mother actually knew this was coming before it happened. So she left Ciri behind to her grandmother.
One day, Ciri was completely lost in a forest and almost killed by dryads. Fortunately, Geralt showed up and instead of killing Ciri, the queen of the dryads gave Ciri the choice to either go with the dryads OR Geralt. Ciri chosed Geralt, but Geralt refused to take Ciri with her. So, he decided to leave her to a guy who was actually working for her grandmother. Good enough. But something then happened: the war.
The Nilfgaardian invaded Cintra and kidnapped Ciri. But she managed to escape and then wandered for quite a while completely alone until a merchant adopted her. Coincidentally, Geralt was helped by this merchant and brought to the merchant's home. United again, Geralt took Ciri with him this time and brought her to Kaer Morhen, the home of the Witchers. She was then partially trained (without the mutations) as a Witcher by Triss, Geralt, Vesemir, Lambert, etc. This is also where she learned she had Elder Blood.
Geralt and Triss then took her to a temple full of mages where they met Yennefer! From that moment, Yennefer became the spiritual mother of Ciri! Multiple mages, mostly Yennefer, trained Ciri to control her powers and her Elder Blood. Together, they visited lot of magical schools where Ciri could learn more powers and to control them. At some point, she was even offered to attend to a conference of the best mages in the country. But something happened during the conference. Vilgefortz tried to capture Ciri, but failed. Ciri escaped through an unstable portal.
From there she basically got lost and almost died multiple times. Joining different groups of people and then fleeing. Getting captured and then escaping. Being hunted and then hunting. At some point she escaped to a region called Tor Zireal, the home of the Aen Elle elves. This is where the Wild Hunt comes from. This is where Larra Dorren lived. See, when Larra Dorren had her daughter with a human, the Elder Blood passed on to the human race. The elves then lost the Elder Blood.
The Aen Elle elves never forgot and considered Ciri had a dept to pay for the loss of the Elder Blood. Avallac'h, the man Larra Dorren was intended to marry, then wanted redemption and proposed her to have a child with the king in exchange of letting her go. However, the king could not have a child with her. He needed a special potion in order to do so. Before receiving the potion, the king told Ciri that Avallac'h would never let her go. So Ciri escaped with the unicorns. The unicorns explained that Avallac'h and Eredin, the right hand of Avallac'h, once possessed a mystical power that opened portals through space and time, thanks to the Elder Blood. But now they had lost it and wanted it back. Which is the reason why Avallac'h wants to keep Ciri so bad, he wants to Elder Blood to be able to open portals again.
This could not be allowed. On the same day, Ciri went to see the king again, only to find that the king had drink the potion (made by Eredin) he needed to conceive a child with her. But then the potion killed the king. Ciri attempted to escape that night, but Eredin stopped her and revealed his and Avallac'h's true intentions. Eredin and Ciri fought a colossal battle and Eredin lost. On her way out with the unicorns, they came across a huge pile of human bones. The unicorns explained to Ciri that Aen Elle was a human world in the past, until Avallac'h, Eredin and their army came from multiple portals and invaded it. If Avallac'h was to take back the Elder blood, the fate of Aen Elle would also be the fate of the Northern Kingdoms. Being chased, the unicorns urged Ciri to open a portal to her world but she could not do it. So the unicorns guided her into opening a portal (the unicorn could naturally open portals which is why they could teach Ciri how to do so), leading to the strongest manifestation of her powers, and then jumped into the Northern Kingdoms.
From that moment, she would be called Lady of the Worlds.
The Wild Hunt (which is probably led by Avallac'h , took Yennefer because she has information on the whereabouts of Ciri or stuff like that . They also want Ciri really bad, because she possesses the Elder Blood that grant them the power to open portals into worlds to invade them .
Now, why is Geralt involved into this? Well because, Geralt wants to remember his past and his past is closely tied to Ciri. Even before Ciri was born, Geralt had met her. What! How? A guy named Duny had saved Ciri's grandfather's life. And ironically, Geralt saved Duny's life. So as a reward, Ciri's mother offered Geralt to name her child. And well, Geralt called her Ciri!!! Surprising ain't it?
So we can say that Geralt is Ciri's spiritual father . And why does Geralt want to find Yennefer? Probably for the same reason as the Wild Hunt.
Hope it help'd ya to understand the story better :).
