how do i beat the dragon if i can't take potions mid combat?
my swallow runs out before the fight is over, and the fire goes right through quen, while the claws 1 shot quen. dafuq are you supposed to do? this fight sucks, and it makes no sense. why doesn't geralt just go back down the tower while hopping over the missing bits? and why does the dragon bust in at the last part anyways? it thinks that sile is still in the room that sile is in (if you let her die). also this fight just sucks in general, all you do is mash spacebar while doing chip damage, and there's no reason to include draconid oil in the game because you never fight any draconids.

First, Quen always protects you for all damage for one attack - doesn't matter if it's a scratch from a nekker or a tree falling down on you. This is why you should have more Vigor points at this point, to recast Quen after it protects you from one attack (but don't use all your Vigor points - always leave at least one unless it's an emergency).

You can drink potions before the fight. The fight really shouldn't take that long (win or lose) for the potions to run out. But if the fight really is that slow for you, then indeed, since you can't drink potions mid battle it gives you an incentive to fight faster.

I don't know what difficulty level you are in (and unless it's on Easy, you can reduce the difficulty even mid-game). If you "mash the spacebar while doing chip damage" you're doing it wrong. First, the Witcher game is never about mashing any button. You can see an attack coming (once you get to know the animations of the different dragon attacks) and roll at the right time to the right place. Then attack and roll to safety.

Don't stand in front of the fire. Try to be to one side of the dragon (not too close) and when you see it's about to breathe fire at you, roll to the dragon's other side and use strong attacks against it and roll away to safety. If the fire causes you problems you might need better fire protection - the Vran armor[witcher.gamepedia.com] is best, of course, and some potions can also help.

If you're doing "chip damage" you either have a bad sword or using a mod which messes up your damage output in this fight. You should use the Deithwen[witcher.gamepedia.com] sword (or something else close to it in stats), ideally enhanced with runes (Ysgith for best damage output). Use heavy attacks. Also use a whetstone or some oil which increases damage (this you *can* apply mid-battle). You won't have to hit the dragon many times to defeat it.

Or, you know, keep your distance and throw lots of bombs and daggers. This also works.

Yep, its all about strategy...if yours dont work then modify and change fighting style to adapt. thats just what a Witcher does! :)

i was doing the attack + roll out of the way. that's what i meant by mash spacebar.

You have two opportunities to take potions. First, you can drink up before entering the tower. Then after you end the fight with the dragon in Sile's room, you can also drink potions before climbing the wall to fight on the roof.
