After the series became playable with 64 bit Macs that use Intel, I decided to have a go through the entire series. I played through Witcher 1 fine - and after installing Witcher 2, at first the game couldn't find my saves. I followed some sage advice I found from this forum, and copied my last save (cloister, after coming back from the ice lands) into the save game folder for Witcher 2.
I'm guessing that made the game find the save, kind of, since now it CTD's after the opening video of a king being assassinated on a ship before the start menu. I tried removing the Witcher 1 savegame file, and I get to the start menu normally - so the issue seems to be with the Witcher 1 save being in the savegame folder.
Any advice?
Can you load previous saved W2 game files? Or are they now disappeared from the game loading screen?
Also do you have STEAM save to the cloud on or off?
Edit: When starting a new game of The Witcher 2 you can import a saved game from The Witcher 1 by selecting "New Game" then "Import Witcher 1 Save" from the main menu. In order to be used, the saved game files should be in their original location.
I haven't played W2 before, so I wouldn't know about previous saves. I tried to start a completely new game, and that worked out fine. Steam save to cloud is on - didn't occur to me it might need to be off.
At first, when I started a new game of W2, my old W1 saves (very end of the game) didn't appear at all - no 'import witcher 1 save' given, despite the fact that the saves were in their original W1 filestructure. I read some advice in this forum and copied my W1 saves to the W2 save folder - which seems to work in some cases. However, in my case it caused the game to CTD before even getting to the game start menu (immediately after the assassination video/cutscene).
My best guess is that on many Macs, W2 doesn't recognise W1 filestructure - which would require copying the save files to W2. This is all fine. However, it seems that whatever they did to allow the game to be played with 64-bit intel (such as mine) caused the game to crash whenever it sees a W1 savefile in W2 savefolder. I'm no game developer, so could be wrong.
Any ideas as to how to fix this?
See this thread if it's of any help for W1 import save files:
https://gaming.stackexchange.com/questions/178964/where-to-put-the-witcher-1-saves-on-mac-so-that-they-can-be-imported-to-the-witc
Thanks for the advice, but it didn't work - the files were where they supposed to be from my earlier attempts to fix this. Turning of cloud saving didn't do anything.
The situation still is - W1 save files in the W2 save folder --> CTD before game start screen. No W1 save files in the W2 save folder --> Game start screen comes up, but with no option to import saves.
Just out of curiosity, what happens if you place only one latest W1 save file in the W2 folder?
Does it sti crash?
Sadly, yes. That's what I've been doing in fact - just putting in one save file. I've also tried alternating it between the second and third latest save files, same result.
Please someone help!
