Retail version to steam
I bought witcher 2 years ago when it first came out the big deluxe edition. Is there a way to use my CD key to activate a steam version or something? or is it completely seperate? If not, does anyone know how to properly update the retail version to the latest patch of the enhanced edition with the extra DLC? It doesn't seem like there is just one patch to download. Seems like a confusing mess... Help

You can use your cd-key to add the game to steam. In steam choose games-activate and type the key, it's simple, really. Then you can download it and it will be tha latest version with all DLC's.

nope doesnt work unfortunately. invalid key. the retail and steam must be seperate? Its weird though, like when I installed the retail version, it prompted me for my cd key, but then i couldnt type it in.. so i just pushed ok, and installed without me having to enter it..

You can use your cdkey to register your copy at gog - you will get significant discount for Witcher 3 (higher then this on steam).

I dunno... Maybe there are different policies in different regions. (I'm in Russia). However, what you decribed sounds extremely strange. My advice is: first, learn if activation of retail keys in steam of Witcher2 specifically works in your region; if yes, then you should adress either Steam's or CDProject RED's support with your issue.
P.S. And, well, it could be that you accidentally bought pirate copy of the game, but I guess that's unlikely because it's not that difficult to tell the difference between it and licensed one.

Thanks for the tip. Its definately not a pirated copy, bought it at JB Hi Fi in a retail box with manuals, map, soundtrack etc..

Wow, didn't know 'bout DRM-related perfomance issue. Sounds extremely unfair, hope now everything is fine.

The CD key you get from retail won't work on steam unless it has the "steamworks" logo on the box. But the key should work on gog.com. I bought the game from retail(physical box), then I bought it again during steam sales because I want it in my steam libary.

Sorry to necro an old thread, but I thought I'd add to the discussion as I've just tried to do the exact same thing as OP and Google brought me here :P

I tried adding my retail (boxed) Witcher 2 CD Key into Steam and Origin, and neither of those worked. But as bakasora mentioned, there is a way through GOG. The link is provided on the CD Projekt Red support area and goes to http://www.gog.com/witcherbackup.

You can use it for Witcher 1 or 2. Once it's in your GOG library you now have a DRM-free version, or you can use "GOG Galaxy" to install and keep it updated in the same way that Steam would.

Of course you could always buy it on Steam directly... normal retail is showing as $19.99 discounted to $2.99 (Autumn Sale price)
