I've completed the game several times and I think it's just for fun. Witcher1 also had tonns of junk weapons (but they were not so funny as shovel or broom). I only used some axe in flotsam (it made quite nice damage).
Junk items are not neede at all, I think.

Shovel's the best weapon in the prologue: almost as much damage as the sword, plus a chance of knockdown, I think, Plus, slung on Geralt's back, it makes him look like The Shoveler! How many chances do you get to smack bad guys with a shovel?
