I need to sneak up behind some guards and bop them un-concious, but it isn't working. Have I missed some training, or something?

I just did that a few days ago. Roche ran some interference and some others I waited until they took a nature break. I don't recall having to knock any out. I might be blurring quests but there is another where you can pay off a working gal to "distract" a guard.

This deal is getting around into the garden to find the part of the Kayran trap. I watched a walkthrough video, where Geralt knocks them cold and loots the garden, (which is much bigger than you'd expect), and he took out 3 or 4 guards. I walk up behind them, but they just turn
around & apprehend me!

Wait for the moment the guards move away from Geralt, then Geralt has to sneak behind them. The proper moment for the hit will be indicated:

Don't give up, Lancer; don't let the guards bring you to Loredo. The Kayran trap is important - not as trap, but as signpost in the Kayran-fight.

I got 'em! I just wasn't being sneaky enough, and my timing was off! This is a valuable part of the game, and could be easily missed. Thanks, guys.
