The area you are trying to enter is the elven baths which you enter later in the game via another route (avoiding spoilers). The path you have blasted is the exit from those baths and you will not be able to enter or leave by that route until you have entered the baths as part of the story. You may also find that as you have blasted away the wall now, you may still have to blast away the wall to leave the baths even though it is no longer there!
I thought the area Geralt was looking at didn't look very cave-like, and now I know why!
As I said in my original post, I wandered all over the surrounding terrain, referring to the Map time and again, but didn't succeed in finding any other entrances, but that's probably because I was so far off base to begin with.
These modern RPGs are really a lot of work to play, in my estimation. I'm struggling a bit with the 3D melee combat, almost motion-sick as the camera whirls and flips around. I know I just have to practice, but as a more-or-less newbie it's a bit frustrating. I tried to play some of the retro 2D RPGs but they now seem almost childish compared to these newer high-impact games.
