Can't enter cave under Elven ruins to get ostmurk
I've found the entrance to the cave and blown away the rock wall that was blocking it. Now Geralt just stands there looking down - no way to descend! I've been all over the terrain looking for some other way in, but found nothing. Is there some item I need to find/buy/craft that Geralt can use to climb down?

That's not the right place for the ostmurk. You find the ostmuk in a cave behind the waterfall, the one into the pool in the forest at the base of the path to the ruins where you are now. Ie: a long way under the eleven ruins that are at the top of the path that leads from the pool.

The area you are trying to enter is the elven baths which you enter later in the game via another route (avoiding spoilers). The path you have blasted is the exit from those baths and you will not be able to enter or leave by that route until you have entered the baths as part of the story. You may also find that as you have blasted away the wall now, you may still have to blast away the wall to leave the baths even though it is no longer there!

Well, Furiey, you've saved my bacon (or my mouse hand, anyway) once again. I should send you some Internetz as a reward!

I thought the area Geralt was looking at didn't look very cave-like, and now I know why!

As I said in my original post, I wandered all over the surrounding terrain, referring to the Map time and again, but didn't succeed in finding any other entrances, but that's probably because I was so far off base to begin with.

These modern RPGs are really a lot of work to play, in my estimation. I'm struggling a bit with the 3D melee combat, almost motion-sick as the camera whirls and flips around. I know I just have to practice, but as a more-or-less newbie it's a bit frustrating. I tried to play some of the retro 2D RPGs but they now seem almost childish compared to these newer high-impact games.

I know the feeling. I'm a long time gamer, always used keyboard and mouse but have now moved to a steam controller as my hands aren't a flexible as they used to be. It has certainly helped with the scrabbling about the keyboard problems and hand cramps I was getting. I didn't play this type of game until the last couple of years and have sort of got stuck playing the witcher series.
