Can't beat Kayran

I'm stuck at the Kayran, I've been following the advice of using Yrden to trap it and then chop off tentacles. The most I ever get to is three tentacles before I end up dead. Each hit from the tentacles costs so much vitality. I've probably tried it about ten times now and keep dying. I'm using the mongoose potion, swallow, and rook + an oil on my sword. My typing/hand reaction speed isn't good, so I'm not good at dodging. Are there any other tricks or mods that would help? I enjoy the story and just want to keep going and get done with this monster.

You need almost nothing - no potions, oils, no armor, no dodging/rolling - the cheapest silversword will do the job. The only thing which is very, very, very useful is the kayran trap - not as trap, but as signpost. Geralt knows exactly where he has to go.

So if you have real problems with the ballet then switch to "easy" and have a look at the appropriate video:

On any other level you should be aware of these facts:

* You are confronted with three QTEs instead of one.
* No tentacle is able to hurt Geralt if you use Quen. So start with Quen and refresh it after a tentacle hits Geralt.

Remember, this is no Dark Souls, you don't have i-frames on dodges. Destroy a tentacle and get the hell out of range. Rinse and repeat until you trigger the cutscene.

I'm trying to get the trap parts now, but keep getting caught by the guards. Even when I cut off the third tentacle, I still die. I turned off the QTES. I'm pretty new to gaming and almost wish that after failing X many times it would just let you through

If its any help I am 64 and have owned this game since it came out on disc and was a complete mess with the mouse being so fast it was a blur any way over the years i have tried and tried to get past that thing Even bought the game on Steam enhanced........ Saturday i decided another try watched all the videos on u tube and had a go And man i did it finally after years of trying it happened Moral of the story is dont give up its a good game Yes put it on easy and turn of the QTE and dodge like crazy.......

Dear reader, in the unlikely event that you have lost all hope and uninstalled the game - allow me to impart my two florens worth.

My advice - you say you want to get on with the story - the kayran is an obstacle getting in the way of said story about geralt and myself...er that is, the great dandelion, out to save the day, then kicking back with a few shot of mahakaman spirit

turn the difficulty down. There's no shame. turn it down, get it done, move on, heck, even turn the difficulty back up once it's done.

then you too can rejoice in the continuation of this fabled journey

I've managed to get the Trap, I have it on easy and still keep dying. I'm pretty new to games and ugh.

For me it was dodging the tentacles, I usually end up getting hit before even make it to the trap. Once I do get hit, it takes me a while to readjust the camera and position, so I usually end up getting hit again, and then its pretty much game over.

OMG! Now I see what your real goal is. You're not looking for help, you don't want to learn anything, you want to whine instead of saying thx. And you do that in a thread that shows you with video instructions how even less talented players like you can easily solve the Kayran problem.

I have no clue how many times I have started this game, but is just about the point being boring, unlike 1 & 3. I start in the dungeon, then get called by Vernon Roche for an interrogation and tell my story. Eventually I am given a key and then I start my escape. Once I am out I meet Triss and Roche and board a ship and it is off to Flotsam. I exported my stuff from 1 so have some good stuff such as the Aerondight silver sword. There is a lot to do here both on the board and off. The last thing I usually do is to mend that medallion with the Herbalist. The Kayran, I will take Sillie to the Bridge and leave her there and head back to town. Once you get down there and she calls it out of the river, there is no way out and messing with it is near instant death. It only pays 400 orens. By the time you finishe the stuff plus what is on the board, except the Kayran, you can go into the woods and hunt, but there is little to hunt at this stage. You can go across to where the Bandits were and call up some Drowners and Drowned dead. They Over leveled the Kayran to the point if you are a level 10, it is nearly impossible to kill it, but it WILL get you quick. I have been playing this since it came out and now it is pretty much same old same old and has gotten boring. I can still harvest and sell Herbs for Orens, but getting XP as gotten pretty slim and it takes too long to get 1000 XP for another level. Thos last playthrough, I spent a lot of time after I dumped Sillie at the bridge, talking to people seeing if I could get things moving. I know there is a prison ship, but couldn't get past the guards, which I expected. I am thinking there is supposed to be a fire from what I have heard somewhere. That hasn't happened yet. I am just about ready to call it a game and move on to something else for a change. TW1 had a Boss at the end that was somewhat difficult. It was a Queen Kikimore or some such thing. You were trying to get through some caves and she was trying to get you. You make matters worst, all her minions got in your way. On swipe from her and your were toast and I did get toasted a few times. The thing is, it is doable and you don't need a lot of finesse to do it. That Kayran, you go after a Tentacle, and he is going to slap you down with another one. I don't know how many times I tried that thing, but on the last three play throughs I just take Sillie to the bridge and go back to town. When I get to TW3, Flotsam is just a place on the map and history.

coastie65... You're wrong. What is more, you're stupid. You've convinced yourself no matter how anyone tries to help you understand, that there is not a scripted way to do it. It Is Scripted. What that means is there is only 1 way to do it, Any other methods will fail. With use of dodging and yrden you can trap the tentacles and once you've achieved that you can cut it off, it's timed, if you take too long you will have to re-trap it. I am wasting my time because you've refused to accept that you can't just jump at it and slice it up. You Can Not Attack it like a Drowner, You Can Not Just leave the woman and Walk back to town and beat the Kayran that way either. You Can Not Just chat up town folk and force the game to kill off the Kayran from starvation any more than you can kill the Black Smith. Get It?! You Can't Just Kill it, You have To follow the script. The Script is Trap the damn Tentacles, Cut them off, Once you've cut off 3, it will try to sweep you with it's whip tentacle, You jump on and ride it till you're told to stab it. Once you Stab it and jump back off, it will crush the Bridge and bury itself under the rubble, that is when you climb the rubble and win. It is automatic and scripted, Get IT???????!!!!!!! Of course not, we all cheated. Why did I even bother, go play Packman.

To be honest, Kayran isn't that difficult. I play the game on medium and I didn't struggle too much there. You don't need Kayran trap, Yrden is good enough. I needed to cut off only 2 tentacles, than I jumped on another one and took a ride. Kayran ended up under the bridge and the rest is the easiest part. You don't need any potions or oils and it's possible to beat it without Quen. Tentacles cause extreme damage, but higher level or better equipment won't help you. Just go on the one side, set the trap, dodge, cut it off, repeat with the next one, take a ride and you're done. The dumbest thing is to stay in the middle. After few deaths you can learn the pattern of it's attacks. There is no other way, you can't cheat.. Be patient and don't give up!
