Don't do anything like that. You could kill the Kayran at lvl 1, if you do it right - and if it would be possible to reach his lair at this level.
It's always the same with the boss fights in TW1-3: They seem to be challenging as long as you don't know how to manage them. As soon as you find the king's way (or the king's ways) the boss fights get easy enough.
Btw.: It's no boss fight (it's a ballet of sorts) - but some kind of riddle: The player has to guess how he figures prominently in the choreography of the devs.
You need almost nothing - no potions, oils, no armor, no dodging/rolling - the cheapest silversword will do the job. The only thing which is very, very, very useful is the kayran trap - not as trap, but as signpost. Geralt knows exactly where he has to go.
So if you have real problems with the ballet then switch to "easy" and have a look at the appropriate video:
With trap:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GqoWXx-IBRk
Without trap:
Now you have to watch exactly where Geralt should cast Yrden.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsXdXAx2aSk
On any other level you should be aware of these facts:
* You are confronted with three QTEs instead of one.
* No tentacle is able to hurt Geralt if you use Quen. So start with Quen and refresh it after a tentacle hits Geralt.
Here's the ballet on "dark", but it's almost the same for any other DL but "easy".( Well: On dark mistakes are deadly.)

Thanks!
I can only offer a few pieces of advice:
1. Brew the mongoose potion before. Throw in a swallow and tawny owl and it's enough. You can add an oil like falka to your blade.
2. Sometimes running is faster and more precise than a Dodge. You can dodge right into a tentacle attack accidentally.
3. A lot of tutorials recommend placing yrden and rolling away so that the tentacle hits your spot. That's dangerous since you can roll away to early and get hit off the side.
What i do know is map quen to an easy to use key. As soon I cast yrden I stay put and immediately hit quen until it activates. Then I stand there on the yrden until the tentacle hits me dead on. Quen will absorb the hit and stagger you then, I run for the pink bulge and hack away with strong attack. When the kayran goes mad, hit quen again and move to the left side near the jump down point. Repeat x 3.
4. Deactivate difficult qte.
- The Tutorial recommended "Easy" for me - probably because I'm bad at dodging! Just been trying to not get surrounded. Don't think I have a difficult Qte..at least the fights weren't so hard.
- Never used Quen and Yrden in Witcher1. Just Igni and occassionally Ard for obstacles. Could play that game on Hard. Leveling often made a big difference in that game.
1) Got some mutagens from a Queen Bug. Should I try to take those. They are at different intensity levels. Got my first Trophy from one too. +3 Armor should help, right?
2) Enhanced my items for more armor, damage, hp...
3) I suck at dodging, so a higher level would allow me to be hit more, right?
Hmmmm...
Well, thanks for the help!
Cheers!
You need to use Yrden to pin the tentacles to the ground
1. Walk either left or right to get to the two vulnerable tentacles on either side (I prefer left hand side, towards the bridge).
If you have the kayran trap you can use it to get a free tentacle knocked off. Head toward the yellow indicator for the trap, wait a few meters away from it for the kayran to start moving a tentacle over to smack you with then roll away towards the trap and place it, park yourself on it and wait again for the tentacle to start moving toward you (always be looking at the kayran)
If you don't have the trap you have to use yrden instead, place an yrden on the ground, wait for the tentacle to move towards you then roll out of the way. Tentacle will be pinned to the ground for 5s, more than enough to lob it clean off.
Once the tentacle has been removed move over to the cliff wall by the bridge or the mucus sack if you went right hand side and wait for the kayran to stop fidgeting
2. Repeat above, lobbing off the second tentacle on your side and again retreating outside it's spasm range
3. Move to the other side of the kayran. Pin the third tentacle of your choice, lob it off as before but beyond moving a bit away from it you should stay put. Kayran will start moving it's front tentacle back slowly and then lunge it toward you, time will slow down and you will be prompted to hit a button... do so (for mouse/keyboard it's the right mouse button I think).
You will jump up on the tentacle and be prompted to tap the left mouse button until a bar fills up, then be swung around some more and it will prompt you to hit space bar setting you down gently near the entry point to the area.
4. Kayran will destroy the bridge ruin, dropping down a huge chunk of it directly on it's own head. To the front of you will be a large chunk you can hide behind but you don't need to. Put up Quen now!
Run over to the left, climb up the ramp the ruins have created and keep going until you get a cutscene
Some notes, as long as you stay in the "shadow" of a tentacle you have removed, the kayran will not hit you while it is fidgeting and as long as you stay away from the front of it it's poison spewing will not affect you (aka you don't need mongoose)
I did this fight last week on dark and after a few... miss steps... I got it perfected as above. In the end fight took me around a minute due to knowing the mechanics and the timings. It takes practice but it is a really easy fight... now Letho... Letho is an entirely different cookie....

Swallow, tawny owl and oils are unnecessary. Mongoose isn't useful for the fight if you do it right, but Geralt gets a permanent protection against poison. You have to find ostmurk (-> quest). Contact Triss.
@ LG
Dodge isn't necessary. And if you follow my video above you will not run very much.
@ LG
Rolling isn't necessary as shown in my video above.
This is definitively wrong:

Don't use the Kayran-trap for the first tentacle. As trap it's almost useless, but it's priceless as signpost. Save it for the third tentacle; here it's really useful-
Also, I'm not great at this fight, so thanks for "All" the advice!
I'm level 8 now, btw.
Is this a *necessary* fight? I.e. Do I have to do it to finish the chapter?
Also, is there anyway for "Fast Travel"?
Cheers!
After the fight. Geralt wins two levels in this fight, so he was lvl 9 before.
Which is completely unnecessary. Did you really watch my videos, LG?
Sure; it's a main quest.
LG, i'm pretty sure that you are able to beat the Kayran, and it's a really good feeling. But you have to try it seriously. So upload your savegame before entering the Kayran-arena and post the link, then we'll try it together.
I definitely watched the vids...Didn't know that Geralt got 2 levels

Hey, thanks. Probably won't get to til this weekend. Also, want to finish some other quests first.
Cheers!
Oh, didn't know about that fight. Other fights have been doable. Had to run away sometimes, but got the critters later.
You only get that quest if you got the medallion from New Boy during the prologue (the new recruit of the Cinfrid Reavers you meet just outside of Triss' tent).
It's a tough fight against wraiths, you will need to kill off 9 wraiths as I recall, and there are always 3 attacking you, every time you take one out another spawns.
Personal note, it isn't a tough fight as such. You have all the time in the world so you can kite around by dodging or running to make sure you can keep quen up and slowly reduce the wraiths.
