I'm not sure exactly where you have got to but maybe some of this may help:
So you went down the well, through the sewers, up the tower, got the cutscene with the Scoiatel in the boat.
Carried on up the tower, fought the 3 guards, went through the gate facing the bit where the guards were and along the corridor to the locked gate at the end (looting stuff as you went).
To your right near the gate you climb up the broken bit of wall, follow the path into the graveyard where you fight 3 more guards.
There are then 2 doors that take you into the building where you fight 2 more guards.
Through the doors at the far end of that room into the courtyard.
I have seen so many games making the exact same mistake...
If you need walk-through guidance, can refer to the guides on quite a number of gaming sites.

Thank you, Furiey, for the info, and thanks also to ForevaNoob for the commiseration.
I haven't been gaming long - always too busy with work and family, now retired with leisure time and $$ to spend on a decent rig - and I can see that there are certain foundation skills that I have to acquire if I'm going to enjoy playing them!
Riotangel, thanks for the reference to the walkthrough. I know they exist for various games, some cover every pixel of the game, others are for specific missions/quests/places in a game, etc. I've even discovered the gameplay videos on YouTube. Things have come a long way since Pong!
There's a lot of us 'advanced' gamers out there who only had imagination to use before...
