Struggling in combat.
I have almost 400 hours in the witcher 3 and completed it many times (once on death march). in the witcher 2 i cannot beat the first enemy with the shield at all and im only playing on normal mode. any ideas?

That's why I couldn't play W3, game looks great, but it's too damn easy :D

It's a matter of practice with the older game's combat mechanics. Timing when to roll (dodge), when to strike. Applying quen helps.

for the guys with shields, you need to hit them with the air wave sign first (Aard) or hit them with the flame sign (Axii), the trap sign also works!

Try getting the Assassin ability (prologue) and hit the back of those who wield a shield. Yrden works very well, but Aard is great for mid to late game...Quen is OP here (kind of Igni was in TW1).

same here , also playing on normal and if there is a shielded soldier or a knight - they always kill me

I believe investing in riposte talent will help disrupt their rhythm as well.

Riposte is useless, learn to time the rolling around enemies, put 2 points in rolling distance, take some practice but in the end fighting is really walk on this sunshine

I invested in rolling to hasten travel across maps. It's quite silly to watch Geralt roll all around the world :D

Oh btw, I've used riposte successfully many times so I do not regard it as useless.

Disagree that riposte is useless. It's basically a free one/two shot of non-boss enemies on hard difficulty. Though yeah, rolling and backstabbing is the way to go.
