Can you actually complete the Conspiracy Theory quest without killing everybody?

This seems to be an issue common for a lot of folks, long story short I find myself with the age-old issue where, after talking with Dethmold and revealing the location of the conspirators, I find myself stuck with the quest prompt to ask for Whistling Wendy permanently. So I'm unable to summon Dethmold's entourage and just have to kill Traut and his goons.

So is this an actual bug? Or is it by design? And if it is a bug, can I actually salvage it without killing them all, or is it just that blitzed?

Not sure about it. But what I am sure - is that Dethmold is worse for the conspirators than Geralt's sword. Dethmold is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ butcher.

The way it went for me was ask for Whistling Wendy and go down and meet Traut, then to summon Dethmold's entourage you have to go to one of the doors, they will then enter and assisst you in the fight. I only managed to get it to work once in all my playthroughs as I was usually too busy fighting to get help!
