The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition

The story at the start of the Witcher 2.
I just want to know if I've got this right.

In the first game it starts at the end of the a 5 year war between the Northern kingdoms (Temeria and Redania being the most prominent members) and Nilfgard. The course of the first game takes place over the span of about a year in which Geralt (who has lost all of his memory nor does he really gain anything back in that regard in the first game) hunts for a faction of "bandits" known as salamandra who stole witcher potions used for mutation. Eventually Salamandra is defeated and the perpetrator behind them killed. In the final cutscene Geralt defends king Foltest from a witcher assassin (whose identity I assume will be revealed in the second game if it is important).

Anyway starting the witcher 2 the civil war that takes place in the first game (esssentially the scoia'tael vs the order of the flaming rose) has ended shortly after the events in the first game. So starting the 2nd game Geralt is imprisoned (I do know why even though I haven't left the tent) and he goes through the events of the day before or few days before with vernon roche (again I know why). After the attempted assassination of Foltest at the end of the first game he hired geralt as a personal bodyguard and starting off there is a small war. Thiss battle is about a rebelious group of soldiers who sided with one of Foltest's mistresses and are defending her. Why are they at war with each other? Is it the typical I can't keep my♥♥♥♥♥♥in my pants so I create a lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s who I have to eliminate so they don't take power from the main family?

And just to keep everything in line (I played a lot of the 3rd game on xbox one but never beat it) the war in that game is the nilfgaards attempting (and from what it seems like suceeding) another invasion.

Basically Witcher 2 starts at the same point when Witcher 1 ended - attempt of assassination of Foltest.

It starts a month later.

And this war, as non-sensical as it may be, is very true to real historical events. Throughout history there have been many rebellions between many royal families in want of the throne, civil wars to decide who'd be the king. You explained it quite well, one of Foltest's many lovers happened to be a woman of power, and having had 2 kids with Foltest, she probably saw a chance to take the throne from him so she gathered a small army to fight Foltest. Foltest, clearly very angered decided to attack straight at their castle and take back his children. That's it.
My mistake then. The story at the begining explains from the moment that Witcher 2 ended to the battle at the begining :)

Yeah it mentions somewhere early on that it had been a month, but it is not hard to miss so....

As summed up by Geralt to Triss? Yes.
(and from what it seems like suceeding)
Minor spoiler: you later meet Radovid of Redania, a man so twisted and ruthless that he can bloody Nilfgaard's nose hard enough for Nilfgaard's commercial moguls to overthrow the Emperor, causing the creation of the Northern Empire.

Fun times.

King Foltest is a great ruler, but a complete idiot when comes to his family.

He refuses to marry. ♥♥♥♥♥ his own sister. Keeps a striga alive for a decade just because she is his abortion child. ♥♥♥♥♥ the baroness but refuses to marry again. Makes morr bastard childs. Goes to a stupid war because of it. Dies in the process.

King Foltest, The Moron.

Yeah he's kind of dumb, but at least he cares about his children.

He didn't go to war, the baroness and her family went to war with Foltest because they saw it as an opportunity to take his power and become the ruling family. I don't see Foltest as a moron, he was a caring leader, going himself head on into battle, can take care of himself, he knows when there are too many people trying to protect him. He remembers the soldiers he fights alongside and also their names, even what they do for a living. His only weakness is that he liked to have sex with as many people as he could. He wouldn't marry these women because he didn't feared the possibility of creating another striga.

Thanks for this thread guys. It helped me understand everything better. I really like to understand the story of games I play. The Witch 1 story was very confusing to say the least, but I understand most of it.

Foltest does not want to eliminate these children - he wants to take them to live with him and train to be royals.
