The combat is tough when you're just starting out. You must get the Position skill in the swordsmanship tree ASAP. Otherwise attacks from behind will deal 200% damage which will kill you very quickly. Be sure to use Quen to minimize damage you take.

For the Malena quest, I found bombs to be very useful in dealing with the nekkers. You can buy bomb formulas from the elf Cedric. I crafted about 15 grapeshot and spammed them at the nekkers. If they don't immediately die, their health is low enough where you can finish them off in one or two hits. I believe you can also buy the forumula for necrophage oil in Lobinden, which will deal extra sword damage to the nekkers.

Use your silver sword on monsters it deals way more damage.
The steel sword is for people.
Also use the spell that lets you take an extra hit.
After that its easy :)
(I had the same problem :D)

Use block as well. But also make sure you use a sign regularly (Q). And some bombs and traps if you have them (and have the time to set them up on the battle scene).

As soon as you've levelled up that first training tree, you'll be able to begin the main skill trees and become powerful.

Just sword mele them, then roll back and throw fire in their faces. Potions and sword enchantments are good, but it's crap that you can't use them during combat as you can't meditate.

I have to agree on that. Combat is very unforgiving to the newcomers. I played Witcher 3 on PS4 and the control mapping is 1000% better than on keyboard or Wicher 2 in general (since they didnt release the game on PS4 :(

I almost wisht that there is an option to just have a bot play the game and you chose the dalogue and enjoy a superb story and characters. xDDD

It gets easier once you get the hang of it, level up a bit and get some new gear.

2 things that seems to get people are:
- You take extra damage from back attacks. This means diving into a group of nekkers is suicide.
- The roll does not have invincibility frames unlike pretty much every other dodge roll. This changes the timing significantly compared to other games. You no longer aim to roll through the attack, but roll earlier to actually dodge it. This also means rolling away from a counter attack after being blocked is often a bad idea. You will just eat a back attack. Block instead.

You can also set it to easy and play with a controler if you are more comfortable with that. If all else fails there is most likely a way to cheat and turn on god mode.
