When played together, Witcher 1 and 2 provide an interesting case study for different flavors of the dark fantasy genre, which became so massively popular among the western audience over the past 10-20 years. Both fit the general ideas of moral greyness or a crapsack world to a tee, but W1 clearly leans towards the hopeful, while W2 is much more cynical. In W1, most characters aren’t "bad" because the story explores their reasons with understanding and compassion, so even straight-up villains become simply a product of their environment. In W2, most characters aren’t "good" because they act like entitled jerks for petty or unsympathetic reasons (and even when some deeper digging is performed, it’s done in a detached manner that really doesn’t raise their likeability).

It’s also all about politics, politics, politics. W1 was an incredibly personal and raw story for Geralt, but here only some vague prep for W3 reminds us of his private interests. Even the primary antagonist’s reasons, which is a tried and tested way for RPGs to reveal something unexpected and exciting about the world, end up as yet another political mess, just on a larger scale.

With all that said, experiencing Witcher 2 was akin to eating a hearty pile of some moody arthouse drama. Realistic and convincing? Maybe, but not pleasant or fulfilling in the slightest, and certainly not worth recommending to an average person who could frankly use less crapsackness in their life.
