Why do S rank target times keep changing?

S rank target times constantly change as I achieve them and I'm confused as to why this is happening.

On level 2-7, for example, it's a good four or five times now that I've achieved the displayed target time from the last completion screen I saw, only to find that it now displays one five seconds faster than the last time I saw the screen. A guide says it's 45 seconds and my first time getting an A, it said 1.15 and then 1.00 and now it says 0.50. I hope it's actually 45...

Unfortunately, this board is dead but yeah, it's really annoying how the game does that.

No, seriously, ♥♥♥♥ this. What is the design rationale and is there some way to predict the actual target times? I spent a half-hour trying to get my time down by half a second, and when I finally succeeded, I had beaten my time by seven seconds, only to find that the new target time is three seconds faster than my new best time. I do not understand this design at all.

Well, I may be late for this, but in case you were still wondering (? the target time, as the target of number of deaths and times detected, that the game shows you is the target to get the next star. To achieve S-Rank, you need to get three stars in these three features. So, if you get, for example, one star in time, the target that the game displays will be the maximum time you can take to complete the level in order to get two stars. Then, when you complete the level under that time, the game will show you the target time you to get three stars.

Thanks. I had sort of worked that out. But it's just weird that it doesn't tell you what you need to do to get S in addition to the next star. And very annoying. I S-ranked everything in the game, though, so it's fine now (for me). Just don't really get why they went with this approach.

Cheers. I was using your guide at the time. I do believe some of the times given were faster than the minimum best time required for an S rank. The guide was very helpful, though I tried not to use it a huge amount in hopes of working things out myself.
