It requires libssl.1.0.0, no other version will work and most distros I've seen are on OpenSSL 3.x, so it requires some truly antiquated libraries.
Furthermore, Steam's built in ability to use its own runtime libraries to run games doesn't seem to work for this game, as not even using the non-native runtime launches the game.
I managed to get it to the point where it would attempt to launch, by copying Steam's own libssl.1.0.0 and libcrypt.1.0.0
It then complained about missing libsteam.so, and this one I had to take from the ubuntu12_32 folder in Steam and copy to the folder the game expects (linux32).
The game would then launch, but the window would only blink for a second, then the game segfaults.
My surface-level debugging hints at the fact that it's looking for an X11 font that doesn't exist on my system, and I am genuinly not THAT keen on playing this game that I will go dive through the code, just to find what antiquated font it wants from me. So I'll try the windows version through Proton. The game is horrifically out of date, so good luck getting it to run natively.
It also seems the development team have forgotten entirely about its existence, as support is nonexistent.
Unfortunately, the game is exceptionally crash prone (always was), so don't expect a smooth experience.
