Hero is very useful due to the range of his skills. Stomp can stop a wave. Taunt can cause all enemies to follow him (including Trolls). There is plenty the hero can do, if you use him well. We've also buffed him and he can be up to level 10 now.
And second; Instead giving Hero ability to get to 10 lvl, I prefer to give it to army, as with second tier are more usefull than Hero (still, 1 card is better than all Hero abilities).
Whether it's resource picks or combat unit picks, the opportunity cost of trying to put a band-aid for the hero not being a personal contributor to wave killing just doesn't catch up. Far better to upgrade your army barracks, farms, lumber mill, etc. than to uptick a very insignificant source of damage and tanking. Any unit can kite, and you need barracks units far more to actually win the fight.
It's the reason the best builds don't diversify the army, it's suicidal to the deck efficiency and real estate efficiency. Aspects the hero upgrade temple doesn't really improve upon. It's nice imagery, but much like fighting the giant boss. You just don't really, instead, abuse targeting with expendable units and DPS race them down before everything falls apart due to unchecked wave progress.
Abilities have cool downs you have to work around, far more reliable to just have a strong economy and an endless stream of martyrs.
You're completely ignoring the fact that the game is not finished, and base the current state of the hero on the two available maps. We've just added in a wave editor, which means people can create very specific challenges for the community, that will require specific approach to building your decks. Some of them might involve an early hero build, for example. The hero can have almost 1 million health with the right build, and if you level him up to level 10.
Furthermore, once the map editor hits, the community can create maps that throw out the current meta out of the window. A map without any resource slots but you have to rely on caravans? Sure why not. In cases like this, the hero will be much more useful.
Please don't judge our decisions based on the current state of the game, when you don't know what we have in store in the future and when it's constantly changing. With the new buffs he's very powerful
The hero is here for those who want to use him, and with the right cards he can be very efficient.
Sure, I get that, and I appreciate all feedback. However you do not see the whole picture and base everything only on your own experience. We are talking to tens of people every day. People on discord share their decks, strategies and views - and we clearly see that a hero build has a place in the game at the moment, and we, as devs, know that he will be even more useful in the future.
Did you know that you can complete Nightmare 4 of Western Valley using ONLY the basic deck from the start of the game, with 18 cards in it, and fully upgraded town hall tech tree?
