Killer Croc fight bugs
Ok, so I'm late to the party and have just started playing this game - I had previously heard that this game was buggy as hell but I figured by now at least most of the major bugs would be worked out... this turned out to be naive...

During the killer croc fight right near the beginning (incidentally, in retrospect it seems silly that you ♥♥♥♥♥foot around him in Asylum after beating the crap out of him with your bare hands in origins but hey ho!) I found that I not only experienced some black screen game crashes (accompanied by a loud, obnoxious buzzing noise that initially sounded like a hardware fault but stopped as soon as I tabbed out of the game), but that Killer Croc would glitch out and flash in an out of the game, especially whilst button mashing to escape his grip and doing the beat down. In addition to this, there were serious detection issues where he would charge (also flashing) and run straight through me like Ellen Page in X-Men 3 - Hey, it made the fight easier, but it's not exactly immersive!

Any one else experienced bugs like this? Do they only get worse as the game goes on?

Hehe, it's best not to read too much into the continuity between this "origins" Origins, because you'll just make yourself dizzy. ;-)

I love how WB has said they're aware of the flickering Croc issue and they're working on a fix...that's been since November 1st, I think.

I found what worked best for me was to force the game to not use DirectX 11, but start up in DX10/9. It hasn't completely fixed the problem, but it makes it a lot less annoying. He still flickers from time to time, and Restarting from Checkpoint seems to help...sometimes..when the fight starts and starts doing that, but not always. But at least it doesn't crash my game completely now. I put -d3d9 in the game's Launch Options in Steam Library (right-click, Properties). Now he just flickers occasionally. I recommend manually installing the DX files again, just to be sure, from the _CommonRedist folder under BAO..just double-click DXSetup.exe and let it refresh everything.

As for getting worse, that's a roll of the dice really. Some people experience "black void" saves or "infinite falling" saves, where the game auto-saves and become corrupted when Batman ends up "outside of the normal geometry" of the world. This has been linked to a corrupt bmengine.ini file and usually just deleting it fixes the non-solid buildings, but the game save is forever corrupted when that happens. One of the latest patches screwed that file up for a lot of people.

Then there's the pre-Copperhead fight elevator glitch that crops up for a lot of people. The game just decides to crash every time Batman exits the elevator in the Sionis Steel Mill after he's been bitten by Copperhead. That one's fun, and usually a game-stopper for a lot of people.

So, nothing really serious. ;-)

I recommend manually backing up your save game file(s) occasionally...well, ok, frequently, so you can revert to a previous save without too much hassle and lost time.

Haha yeah so I gather - already aware that I have to ignore all references to technology as well :P

Right well I won't hold my breath for a solution to that then! As I said, I managed to beat Killer Croc but I think I will give the fix a go anyway - thanks! Is there any reason to use "-d3d9" rather than say "-d3d10"? I'm not too experienced with using Launch options so forgive my ignorance!

Right, good to know that I could at any moment randomly lose all my progress irreversibly! Whereabouts are the saved games located? I ask because for some games they appear in the Steamapps folder, other times in "My Documents" (of all places). I'm sure I'd be able to manually locate them but I'm at work at the mo so if you happen to know that'd be handy :)

Glad to know all the major kinks have been worked out after 3 months :P

Thanks for your help!

I've played it several times without any problems.

Yep hopefully they'll fix the Croc fight. I actually just played it a few days ago. Lots of hesitating, and at one point about 80% of the way through the fight, the sound completely stopped. I was able to keep playing, but there was no sound. Once the fight ended, the sound came back into the game. Very buggy fight indeed. I do love this game though. It's probably my favorite of the 3.

Yeah I got the sound issue too (shortly before crashing) and I also got it at the main menu when I first started playing

The reason I say -d3d9 is that the Unreal engine is set to default to DX10 if your card supports it, with that command, or DX9 if your card only supports 9. It's just easier than saying use -d3d10 if your card supports it, or -d3d9 if your card doesn't. A lot of people don't know what mode they're running the game in, or what their card supports, so it's just laziness on my part.

I can't remember also, but I think some versions of Unreal don't support the -d3d10 switch, but I think BAO does. Again, too lazy to check. :-P

That's why you'll see me say DX10/9, because the cards are smart enough to run in whichever mode it can with the one option switch.

My first play through of the fight I had no issues whatsoever. Unfortunately, later attempts I encountered the issue of Killer Croc disappearing, sound cutting out, and the game crashing. I attempted the solutions provided by others to no avail. In fact, some led to other bugs I had not encountered, such as the black screen with HUD. After an hour of angry gaming, I seem to have found a "step-around" that seems to work.

From my experience, the issues start if Killer Croc contacts the North Wall. In subsequent playthroughs I make sure that I'm always forcing him South East (Western wall is iffy). The only bug that I can't seem to get around is one that is less game-breaking; whenever I get to the first button mash sequence where Croc is trying to bite into the Bat, the game does not register. I tried several times pushing faster than I ever have and still got nothing. To make sure I wasn't just finding an excuse for sucking, I watched the sequence while I mashed, and while I put in no inputs at all. Lo and behold, they are exactly the same. I know it's not quite a big deal to take some damage, but it would be nice to make it through the fight with no dings in my armour.

Killer Croc fight is definently the buggiest thing in this entire game.

All I can say is make sure you are running the latest GPU drivers and you have downloaded .NET FX 4.5.1

Still happens in 2021. Just started the game and while the Croc fight he started to flicker and dissaper in the middle of it, and the sound was cut of. Then the sound toruned on again, but those graphical glitches persisted untill the end of the fight. Played on GTX 1060, overclocked, updated drivers.

It's insane that such a severe bug was never fixed... 2021 and it was never resolved, amazing

What do you expect? WB decided way back in 2014 to not continue patching but rather focus on new DLC. Great way to go! So through what miracle should the remanining bugs disappear? And people still bought and buy it, some even consider this the best and most underrated Arkham game ever, no matter what. Seems like WB did everything right... ;)
