They are three separate games in the series. They list them together to make you notice them all.

The release order was Asylum, City, Origins, but it doesn't really matter which ones you play first. Check their respective forums and reviews to make a decision. I've read that Origins is buggy, but I haven't tried it.

It's best to play Asylum first for gameplay reasons. I'd suggest playing in release order anyway

all 3 games have their issues. There's a few in Origins that never really got properly fixed, but there are workarounds.

I would play Origins, Asylum,City but the fighting is so much better in origins, so then you would find AA, and AC sluggish. I found City better for map exploration as its easier to get around. In origins seem to spend ages crossing the bridge. Batarang seems easier to control in City as it was vital for some of the riddler puzzles. However I did think he had too many puzzles in City. Made it a bit unrealistic, As he would have had to spend months setting them up. But it gives you more to do when the story is finished. City lets you play catwoman and robin if you have the DLC. The cut scenes in Origin are awsome but I didnt like the auto save before boss fights as it meant you couldnt explore or change your mind once commited. The bosses are alot harder in origin. Apart from the first onethat topples over.

So overall

Origins effects, good story ,average gameplay
City great for free roaming, open world, and good gameplay.
Asylum very atmospheric, smaller world and story but a good intro to batman games.

in origins u got fast travel so at the end when map is unocked , more easy to move around. its true that during story you have to travel by foot or flying a couple of times but thats part of the story.

1) Batman Arkham Origins +Online Play
2) Batman Arkham City GOTY +Cat Woman
3) Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY Edition

take asylum its the best game of the series
City is 2nd
Origins is very buggy so maybe buy it but only with the knowledge that its possible you cant play it proper. It took me half a year to workaround most of the bugs...
fighting part is pretty bad story is ok
So my persnoal advice let origins out
wait for Arkham knight.

Batman Origins is the worst one of the series imo. The boss difficulty is not balanced enough in regards to the normal settings. The bosses are too hard on normal, and regular enemies too easy. Fighting the same boss like Deathstroke over and over is wrecking my fingers, and boring. The graphics are worse, in that they're less detailed than the previous versions. The gameplay of knocking out bad guys who are already dizzy on the ground, is ruined, as the ctrl right click strangle them thing is not working as good as in previous versions. I could go on with other aspects of this Origins failure. In a word it sucks most because of the boss difficulty or responsiveness of the controls is not right. Normal mode is just too hard. Easy mode won't give you the game plus, so it's bumming me out.

If you're having difficulty with Deathstroke, then I'm sorry to say this, but you plainly suck at the game.

This is the "gameplay reasons" I mentioned.

This is a common complaint from button mashers. This fight is all about timing.

Oh please, that is patently untrue. AO's graphics are are part with or slightly better than AC's.

What? Are you talking about the Ground Pound Takedown? It works exactly the same, but the animation is not interupptable, which is, afaik, how it was intended to work in the first place (though don't hold me to that, it's just my opinion) .
It does make it more risky to use, but then it's you that needs to learn the correct circumstsances in which to use it.

as the ctrl right click strangle them thing is not working as good as in previous versions.

Huh? What are you talking about?? Right click to "strangle" ??

I could go on with other aspects of this Origins failure.

Please do. But I don't think you really could, or you would have.

Yah i've heard numerous people make the same complaint, and frankly, my response to it is still the same - this is a failure on your part to not adjust to the differences, not on the game for not being EXACTLY the same as AC, though the combat is, for the most part, mostly unchanged.

How can people actually be this stupid? I mean 60 seconds on google or wikipedia would clear this right up.

I got through it, but it was unusually difficult for a 2nd boss, and a bit abnormal gameplay wise. Too much auto animation, instead of realtime feeling, like the last two versions.

When the bad guys are on the ground with the their dizzy head spinning graphic, and you want to finish them off. In the first two versions you just hold the ctrl key and right click next to them, and then finish them so they don't get back up. This seems broken in this version because it doesn't work 90 percent of the time now.

Works fine for me. You probably mashed the keys, or held the right click too long, and ended up going into counter instead of taking down the thug.
