Edit: I found how to start the game again. Start Arkham Origins Online, then exit it, and then start the Single Player version. The graphics settings will be reset, so I changed those back to my liking except I left PhysX at 'normal'. I can now play the game, but if someone has an idea why PhysX doesn't work on 'high', let us know.
Yup, windows 10 for me as well. 64 bit.
If it's stuck and you need to load the game again, head to Steam\steamapps\common\Batman Arkham Origins\SinglePlayer\BMGame\Config
Delete BMengine, and all the graphics options will be reset on loading.
I thought it was the DX11 features at first, but I turned every option on and off till I discovered it was indeed the physx high.
Weird bug. would love a solution. My GPU is more than capable and those effects add a lot to the game.
♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ this actually worked for me. You are the bomb man! Can't believe the fix was that simple. I assume, like you said, it's a driver issue, or maybe a game issue that needs to be patched. Not sure. Either way I am able to run it on high now.
Step 1: in nVidia control panel, go to the PhysX tab and make sure your GPU is selected and not CPU or Auto
Step 2: Go to the windows apps control panel and uninstall whatever PhysX you have installed. You don't have to uninistall all nVidia drivers, just search PhysX in your apps list and uninstall just that. Now reboot.
Step 3: Download and install these 2014 PhysX drivers from nVidia: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/physx/9_14_0702/physx-9-14-0702-driver/
Reboot (I didn't and it still worked, I know I'm an impatient hypocrite.)
Voila, functioning PhysX.
Now for some ranting. I still tank about half my frames when there is PhysX on the screen, but it's just so awesome I don't care.
I had a similar fix for Borderlands 2 PhysX, but that was a long time ago I pulled that off and it was a lot more involved, but it wouldn't tank frames as bad after that.
How I did this and the same thing in BL2 was I just looked up the PhysX drivers released ~6-9 months after the game released and installed them after removing whatever was currently installed. There was a way I figured out how to have both current and the old ones simultaneously while having the best performance in all my PhysX games, but I forget how sadly. I did post my solutions all over the place hoping to help BL2 and PhysX fans (Maya's ability with PhysX is amazing) but I have long forgotten where they are.
ANYWAY, the other things I did was change some ini file settings relating to PhysX in willowgame something file, higher memory limit or page file size or something in the ini file? Install all redistributables from the game folder and all of that fixed it to where with my old Gigabyte GTX1080 Waterforce Extreme clocked at 2132mhz would only in the worst of circumstances drop to about 45fps when even extreme amounts of PhysX were going on on screen in 1080p. I think I remember my 3090 being able to drop only to 75 in 1440p. Which for a game that was as poorly optimized as BL2 was and how much of a toll PhysX does take, was wildly impressive and I was very happy with it.
Yes I am an old man. I just turned 35.
EDIT:
I just found my BL2 fix post:

Unfortunately, updating back to the latest version also reintroduced the issue of only being able to go up to Normal PhysX settings in Arkham Origins. There definitely seems to be some kind of compatibility issue with 4000 series cards caused by an update. Unless NVIDIA finds a solution (if they're even aware of the issue in the first place), it might be a good idea to keep a copy of both the 2014 and current PhysX installers on your PC; install the older version only while you're playing Origins, and then update again once you're done with it.
This is good to mention. I didn't experience any issues with other PhysX titles which is weird, but others like yourself might. As I mentioned before, years ago on Win10 I somehow managed to have both current and legacy PhysX drivers for BL2 installed at the same time and it worked flawlessly in both... Perhaps digging around the internet would find my old posts about it, but I have had no luck, it was a decade ago
