The WBID services never went down as many newer games still use their services. This game also never had any servers dedicated for the multiplayer as this game always had been Peer-2-Peer hosted.
The only thing that did not work was the connection to the WBID services which was solely due to the fact that some SSL certificate ran out and the backend threw an error which the Client was not able to handle. The only change that was made to make it run again was basically changing the adress for the backend to an "insecure" adress with "http" rather than "https". The backend is still the exact same as it was 8 years ago. The difference is that this prevents that error from being thrown as an HTTP-call does not check for any certification or security measures.
