How to pronounce gotham
Me and my gf are arguing about the pronunciation of gotham.

She say got ham
I say goth am

Who's right?

Technically you are. Based on the "-ham" suffix -- Birmingham, Nottingham -- it's clear where your GF would draw her pronunciation, but Gotham literally means "the city of the Goths," the city of the barbarians with emphasis on "Goth."

You are of course correct. She must be trolling you on this, having a great laugh!

If you're in Brisvegas and you have cable TV, try looking on Fox8 for the show "Gotham", or just any Batman film, or cartoon. You'll then be able to close the case.

As a native New Yorker (The real Gotham, which is one of NY's many nicknames), I can tell you definitively that phonetically it is pronounced "GOTH-um". The enunciation is modifed by the New York inflection.
