Thus, the pay-to-shortcut DLCs are only a question of when and how soon you want to be overpowered. I had played most Exe Create games in their "DLCs era" without using the DLCs, but recently I bought them for a smoother experience and to support the developers. It's really fine either way. Referencing that one U2 song:
With or without them
With or without them, ah, ah
You can live
With or without them
Since you're generally interested in this type of game: If you've never played a game developed by Exe Create before, maybe you could try out the two games from their "8-bit series" that don't feature DLCs, "Dragon Sinker" and "Alvastia Chronicles". Then you would at least know if the "Exe Create formula" is to your liking.
Obviously, the "damage x 2" DLC is by far the best one. If you only want to buy one DLC, it should be this one.
The EXP and CP (Class Points) DLCs don't stack with each other, but they stack with other in-game EXP and CP bonuses. This means you don't need to buy all three DLCs "EXP x 3", "CP x 3" and "EXP & CP x 2", it suffices to buy both "x 3" ones or only the "x 2" one.
As for the in-game bonuses, you can buy the respective items with in-game premium currency in the in-game premium shop (no real money involved), and you can earn in-game premium currency by completing various tasks in the game. A total of 3 EXP and CP Orbs each can be obtained this way, granting 300% bonus (400% overall) EXP/CP.
There's also an "Aid Room" in which you can use in-game premium currency to boost the EXP gained when fighting at Demon Statues (these are monster terminals where you can repeatedly fight three battles consecutively against monsters of the local area) up to 500% additional bonus EXP. By spending 10 PRP ("Prana Points", the aforementioned in-game premium currency), you can even summon Metal monsters at these Demon Statues, which yield the most EXP by far.
Thus: Even without the DLCs, you can reach a total of 800% bonus (900% overall) EXP (when fighting at Demon Statues), and you can use the DLCs to boost these values to 1000%/1100% bonus (1100%/1200% overall) EXP. Additionally, you can also apply an "EXP up" effect to your equipment, but you'll probably reach maximum level (999) long before you would have reached the maximum "EXP up" value (100%).
My point still stands: The DLCs are pay-to-shortcut only, and I think it would be a pity if you skipped a game that you would probably enjoy just because of their existence.
I think everything has been said about the DLCs. Anyone who dislikes them won't be convinced of the contrary. Considering my special gaming interests, though, I can't be appalled by a few pimples on a game's "face".
