Got an idol room as the first room after completing the tutorial (go into magic tent, and come out into idol room). I picked an armadillo idol and thought that would apply for the rest of the run. I died and was surprised that I didn't get an idol choice at the beginning of the next run. Thought maybe the idol applied until I returned to village.

Today I finally got an idol room and I think it's just a normal room that could happen anywhere and it was coincidence that I got it first. I'd suggest forcing combat before an idol room on the player's first run. The current tutorial is so custom/staged that it doesn't feel like a real run so the first real run should have a more standard structure to help players immediately understand how the rooms work. You could even have special mapgen rules for the first few runs to more slowly scale up difficulty and introduce new roomtypes at a more deliberate pace.
