Ares won't fight me

I seem to have hit a blocker - the only objective available to me is 'Defeat Ares' and I've cleared out all the enemies from his level (apart from him) and the machinery has stopped moving, but Ares is just wandering around the empty level and is impervious to my attacks. He doesn't have a health bar or anything.
I think the script broke somehow. Is there a way to initiate this boss fight? Otherwise I can't progress and will have to give up on the game. Shame, as I really like the game and its soundtrack.

Sorted now. Figured out that there's one particular weapon you have to hit him with to start the fight, then can use whatever weapons you want after that.

you have to go defeat phobos and deimos and then get diomedes spear

Necro thread, but to answer the question: after you defeat Ares' first three objectives (Deimos & Phobos; Ascend the Chasm; Otos & Ephialtes), a fourth objective appears: Defeat Diomedes. Once he's down, you can take his spear, which is only used to puncture Ares and get his fight started.

u gotta fight the funny dudes on the task map, then u get the spear and once u stab it it breaks, so u can 1v1 ares
