If you're just starting, all guns will be pretty much the same. You need to unlock parts and augments for them, which you'll only be able to do by exploring the map. The start is a bit rough, but eventually you'll be laughing as the secret final boss shreds itself on your dual circular barrier made of freezing shotgun shells, while your drone uses a volley of "mini" missiles the size of trucks to melt their face off.

But don't trust anyone who says the shotgun sucks. Used right, none of the guns in the game sucks, it's always "user error."

One thing to be careful with shotgun: Don't overdo it when reducing bullet spread. Past a certain point (which I haven't tested enough, nor want to) reducing bullet spread, you'll end up with all the "pellets" of the shot cramped into one single, small ball. The advantage to this is that you'll melt any enemy you manage to hit, but you'll be left with what's basically a buckshot, which is quite annoying to use IMO if you're used to the normal "spray and pray" of shotguns.

On the other end of the spectrum, with enough bullet count multipliers and splitting, you may end up in a situation where the world becomes shotgun bullets. Wish I was kidding, but the game doesn't cap almost anything, so you can have hundreds of bullets on screen (specially if your drone also has a similar setup) if you get lucky enough with upgrades.

And another fun thing: You can eventually find a homing scope. It works for the shotgun. Yes, you can have a homing shotgun. The only answer to the "why?" some people may ask when told that is "why not?" ;)

Not a pro, but I've beaten enough Touhou games (and others of its kind) to feel at home in a "bullet hell" game - which this game can turn into at times, there will be enough bullets flying from and towards you to make the old "like standing in the rain without an umbrella and trying to not get wet" meme quite descriptive of what your character is going through.

I also like to over-analyze game mechanics, even if I can't look at the game's code.

The only issue the game has is that a lot of the "fun" mechanics are only unlocked after you beat the "final" bosses, and that could take a while depending on the player's mindset and/or skill, from what I've read.

I just grabbed ol'shotty and gave my drone homing missiles and both bosses were toast in just a few tries.
