How do you learn more magic?
the game says you can learn new spells just by using magic based on the rank of that characters element. but i've been using guinevere and scarecrow's magic almost every battle for about 6+ hours now, and they've never learned anything. both have good int and increased skill in the element of choice, both have slots open on the skill list (not sure if that matters or not, but i always keep 1 or 2 slops open)

I don't have an answer for the main question, but it's okay to fill up your slots. Glimmers occur with a full skill list and even add themselves to your skill list for that battle. You'll have to slot it in after the battle, though.

You don't need to keep slots open thankfully. Magic is learned after battle. It will tell you. As far as why you haven't learned anything, I think that's also up to RNG to an extent. I spoke with someone who said they hadn't learned any new magic until they were deep in the game. Meanwhile began learning magic in the second world I went to. There's a post with my finding on it in these forums, since it was still up in the air for a lot of people on when magic is learned.

many hours later i still havent learned any new magic with either character. i grind quite a bit when i get a chance to, they cast spells typicaly every battle (sometimes multiple times if they instacast during a combo). lots of skill and stat increases, no spells :steamsad:

You learn magic by using magic, just like SaGa Frontier. If you don't have any magic, there are pieces of equipment you can find that will let you use a spell. Keep an eye on the trading post and keep leveling your shop rank with small trades.

Actually, that's a good start. Reading comments like "if you don't have magic," which you clearly do, gave me the idea to ask:

Just what magic do those characters currently have access to?

scarecrow has gravity bind, i use it constantly when he's not heavy gunning things, guinevere has sunlight. both are default starting spells, not given through equipment.

i think im approaching the end of the 2 girl cop story. guinevere joined like super super early and scarecrow was about 2 hours later or so. plenty of other skills being learned, just no spells

(edit) just uploaded this to show what i mean https://ibb.co/Nn1X95N

I see what you mean. A lot of people are still trying to figure things out on the SaGa discord channel and I've noticed some notorious people on Gamefaqs are doing the same. Part of me wonders if it's still just like a Glimmer chance in a sense, thus tied to the difficulty of the battle. I imagine you've cast the spells through all difficulties at this point (Brutal being an exception).

I had one oddity in my Mido playthrough where Komachi (the puppet with Sunlight) randomly learned Gravity Bind after a battle. She does not have any other wood spells and has 0 wood element. The only explanayion I can think of is that she mimicked it off Lita who did cast Gravity Bind in that battle.

I've been playing around with magic a lot, and I think its a combination of a post battle Glimmer Chance, and having high enough Elemental levels. I think as long as you were casting magic, you can learn a specific spell as long as your elemental level and magic skill are high enough for it.

The Elemental Level is the key though, I NEVER start learning magic until I've increased the elemental levels, but at certain break points I usually learn a new spell of that element in 1-2 battles. I've been playing Tsunanori Mido, and I learned Heavenly Thunder when I increased my Blue Element to 25.

One thing I'm glad of with Magic is that if you're trying to forcefully learn it off of equipment, you can learn a different level of that element, remove the equipment, and then begin learning whatever spell was there.

For example, I had a weapon that had an accessory that had Holy Water and thus learned Sharp Pain. Afterward I removed it, then began using Sharp Pain in battle. Learned Holy Water.

Not calling you a liar or anything, but I have Ameya with Level 26 of Metal element and Level 6 Magic, casting Blood Curdle and Magical Harmony every single battle and after grinding for a few hours I still haven't glimmered another metal spell, which I hope is Vermilion Sands.

I don't have the accessory that gives it since I am doing a minimal cat run and that's why I really want to learn it.

She gets Vermilion Sands from a cat...

In fact, she gets all her Metal spells from cats if you're playing her scenario. I say this because that's the one I'm playing and I got all my Metal spells before I left Miyako City. Maybe it's a variation because it's my second playthrough. Will it even let you learn Metal magic without a cat giving it to you? Now I'm intrigued.

She has Blood Curdle learned and I also learned Magic Harmony. Those are not given to me by cat accesories.

That's why I assumed I could learn Vermillion Sands or any other metal spell.

But I also tried learning fire spells to get Gale Blast, and the same thing.

I have Sunlight from the accessory, learned Song of Souls and no matter what I do I don't get anymore fire spells. I've used those two spells so much that I mastered both techs.

I mean, its fine, my Ameya has good spells, and honestly Magic Harmony is kinda broken because you can get some crazy combos going and it only takes 1 turn to cast, I just want to understand what I need to do so I can learn more spells from different elements and make her the best Magic User across the worlds so if I get to recruit her using another character, she will be all set.

I get what you mean because I have the hairpin that gives Sunlight and the accessory. This morning I FINALLY learned Sunlight from using Song of Souls. I did change one thing in particular and that's fighting Hard encounters. Before I was just spamming through Easy. But it was after a Hard encounter that I learned Sunlight.

Not sure what your experience is with battles, but I'm beginning to understand that learning the spell is likely tied to the stats in the Tips section as well as the Battle Rank and fight difficulty itself. I will attempt to learn Spellbound tonight. I do have a question though:

Do I have to unequip the spell itself in order to learn it? Or remove the equipment that contains it altogether? Seems like every time I learn it, I had to remove the equipment, but I just don't want that to be the case.

From what others have said, you cannot learn a spell that is given to you by an equipment while having that equipment equipped.

So, if a Cat Accessory is giving you Spellbind, you need to unequip it or else Ameya will never learn it.
