so ppl driving a manual gearbox have the habit from F1 2011 to downgrade before breaking, in F1 2012 basically you have to brake then downgrade... codemasters made this change because some ppl took adventage of the situation because the engine failure was a very rare thing.
It s common sense, in F1 you ll never see a turn in in 6th or 7th gear and radical downgear... so i hope you ll change the approach :)
Hope I helped :)

If you blow your gearbox there are no warning's it just goes BOOM!!!
Not sure why it blows on auto gears, maybe be more smooth on the brakes to prevent to quick a drop down the gears.
Gear changes have to be smooth to prevent a blow up, no hitting the limiter on way up the gears (7th gear seems ok to max out) on the way down the gears is a massive NO NO. whatever you do... dont over-rev the gears when slowing down, BRAKE FIRST....THEN DROP YOUR GEARS.
this method has worked for me, no more smoking engine/gearbox and full power (mostly Mix 3) for the whole of P1/Q1/Q2/Q3 & Race
Maybe Codies think we are all driving Lotus 49's lol
