I loved the original Exile games, but this remake doesn't hold a candle to them
Avernum: Escape From The Pit is a neutered version of Exile. The core RPG mechanics are HEAVILY simplified, to be unrecognizable to Exile veterans. The D&D style skills have been replaced by a skill-tree that restricts you to specific archetypes, starting traits that once added character to your, er, characters, have been replaced by fallout-style perks obtained on leveling up, you can no longer play as non-humans, numerous spells appear to have been removed from the game...

Now, I didn't play it very long. Maybe it gets better. Maybe some of the great features of the orignal games appear later, but what I saw has me so disappointed I can't bring myself to continue.

The reason you cant play the other races is because this game is supposed to be set before the events of the other games. A prequel of sorts. Since peace has not yet been established between the humans and the other races they are not playable in this game.

Ive beaten the game and ive beaten the others as well and put some heavy time in Avernum 6.
I agree some of the skills are different but i found Escape from the Pit to the deepest one ive played. It seemed to pull me in the most. Also this one relys on exploring places alot more then the other ones. Ive found this one to be alot more free roaming and "do what you want but here is what you should do soon" then the others which are more of "go do this and heres some other stuff you might not want to do"

I can confirm it does get better a few hours in once you get involved in the story and get higher level characters.

I'm sorry that this games existence made the Exile games disappear and stop working. Oh wait, it didn't. They still exist, work perfectly fine, and are free to download from Spiderwebs own site. Just go play them if your so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ upset about it.
Hey relax. No need to get cranky.

This is a good thread, it answered my question about the game.

<face palm> ... your an exile fan but you dont remember that the humans are at war with the cat and lizard race (its a pain in the ass trying to get the right spelling "no offence to the makers") but yh... if you played exile 2 - crystal souls or exile 3 - ruined world, you'll know that some sort of peace agreement came to be... avernum is sort of following the exile's story time-line (or at least i think it is)

i know that avernum - escape from the pit is basically a remake of exile - escape from the pit
but if anyone knows which of the other avernum games - crystal souls and ruined world comes into play - let me know, because i've currently only got avernum - escape from the pit, ill get the rest once i've completed it and ill play them in time-line order

Really? I didn't know that, actually. Thank you. It will be a pain in the ass to make run on my 64 bit system, but I think it might be worth it.

I played them a long time ago, I was young, and I mostly played Exile III.

yh exile 3 - was best in terms of races, but it was harder then the rest to get into, as for ""the free downloads"" yh they are free to download... BUT... there only unregisted copies,
example being - once you get to ""out of range areas"" the free game hunter demon appears (if you've played the demos you'll know who im talking about <3) also you cant use the editors fully (not that any true fan would use it)... ok ok maybe JUST a little :P

as for the older exile games "working"... they work no problem on a windows XP pc...
but i've YET to manage to get the damns working on my windows 7 pc =/... which is bull
i cant play ANY of the uber old classic games =/

I guess i didn't investigate that fully. I didn't see a "Buy One Now" or "Add to Cart" button on the page, like there is for the other games. And last time I grabbed one (2006) I didn't play it long enough to hit the shareware wall. But jesus christ, 10 bucks is a little steap for one of thoughs games. Given that he's selling the remakes for that, he should eather make them free or sell them in a bundle for like a dollar or two.

there remakes but not complete remakes theres the odd bit and bat thats changed the storylines not 100% similar
zero.cool.is.god Apr 7, 2013 @ 3:21pm
100% similar or not, when you're selling Avernum 4-6 on steam for $5 apiece, and selling the Complete Saga (1-6) on GOG for $12, it's a little silly to try and sell the original Exile trilogy for $10 apiece.

mmm the spiderweb website as nothing to do with steam as well as that the older exile games was released WAY before steam come out...
i dont know which but spiderweb's site set out there prices way back when and steam as you've seen (im guessing they price the games added on the site themselfs) sometimes put special offers on

Steam doesn't just take your game and set a price, as the creator/owner you have agency over pricing. He still owns the games even though they are on Steam and GOG. Steam and GOG have pricing plateaus, but still. I think it's more likely that intrest in the old Exile games is so low that it's not worth his time to change the pricing on the Site store. And since GOG offers Ultima I-III and Ultima IV-VI as $6 bundles, I think it would be totally reasonable to offer Exile I-III as a $6 bundle.

http://www.spiderwebsoftware.com/exile3/winexile3.html mentions the registered version being free, if it's not, may want to contact them.

oh yeah they are free, just not full, you "complete" the game at a point... for crystal souls 2... if i remember rightly you "complete" the game after meeting the crystal souls, and you cant use the full editor
