It doesn't actually matter a great deal - there are no character classes, just starting packages. After you start, you can level up any hero in any way you choose. If I remember right, Shaman has some points in both mage and priest spells, whereas the priest only has the latter (but more of it).

Also, any team can win, (people have even won with a single character) but you'll probably have an easier time finding equipment for them if you have two melee characters and two spellcasters.

wait so you do not need to do all 4 char slots ? few more questions if you do not mind
does world map random spawns keep respawning
does xp get shared or does all party get = xp with no loss

I play with a warrior to make melee damage and to take hit for the others (he has an ability to draw foe's attak), a rogue (archer) for long range damage, a sorcerer for support (with the spell cloak of..., haste etc...+magic elemetal damages, some ennemies are nearly immune to physical hits ) and a priest for healing and magical damages.

Aye, the old Warrior-Rogue-Mage-Priest combo remains a solid choice... as for a healer who can take a lickin', they ALL can - unlike Mage Spells, Priest Spells are unaffected by your armor-class, so if you don't mind putting a few points into Strength, you can armor up your cleric just as heavily as your warrior.

Well, technically, you can armor a mage these days too, but you'll need to take a special trait. So if you specifically want a tough healer, the mage/priest combinations (such as shamans) aren't ideal.

You don't need to do all four, but there's no way to add new characters in later. World map spawns do keep reoccuring, although once you're high enough level there often will be an option to let them run away so you don't need to waste your time. I'm not sure if XP is split or not, but my guess is that it is, and dead characters don't get a share.

XP is split roughly evenly, so if you have less characters, they will get proportionately more experience. This also works when some of them are unconscious: the ones still in play get more experience, while the unconscious one receives none.

Oh, someone just posted a guide about party making in Avernum 2: Crystal Souls. It's fairly similar to this game, it just adds a couple of new races and the traits work slightly differently. At least the main points are quite usable with Avernum: Escape from the Pit.

You can find the guide here:
