EDIT: Just finished the game - still got 3 achievements left hidden. So if they ARE difficulty-dependent, the lowest ('Ward of Avernum') must be for beating it on Normal or something, rather than just winning on any difficulty...
The story would be the same, and unlike Geneforge and Avadon there aren't that many meaningful story choices to make, but a new playthrough with different characters, a differently balanced combat system, and much higher difficulty could be worth it for those extra three.
Also, for what it's worth, the developer liked it enough to import a lot of the changes from the mod into the 2nd Avernum remake.
Well, either way, I think I'll save the second run 'till later - first, I've got all of Crystal Souls to revisit. Wash your neck, Garzahd - I'm coming your way!
jeff said times and times again that difficulty should not hinder people to enjoy story, yadda yadda...
he says that it is not a dishonor to lower difficulty, you should not hesitate , you will appreciate it more..
and yet, at the same time, makes it the ultimate dishonor by niot allowing you to earn achievements, which basically represent your online honor (for wjhat its worth).
oh: somrthing he said about difficulty:

funny to see that avernum eftp has ten times more of what he said he would never put in again.
(difficult fights). probably becasue tahts what hardcore fan wants. and you know what they want? having a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ achievement for playing on torment, and not being cheated of it.
