Hidden Achievements?
I've been playing for a while now - a real trip down memory lane. Ah, how many hours I spent on the original Exile as a youngling... anyway! I'm nearly at the end. 2 of 3 victory-conditions cleared. And at the moment, 6 achievements are missing. Two are for 40 caches and 50 potions (I'll grind those out soon), and the remaining four are hidden. One of THOSE will be for completing the last victory-quest. MAYBE one more is for clearing all three. That still leaves two, maybe three achievements that I have no idea what could be. I've approached the game with a 'go everywhere, do everything' attitude, completing every last side-quest and job-board assignment that's come my way.

So I really can't figure out what I'm supposed to do to get those last ones. It would be a real pain if I wound up missing the full collection on account of something random and obscure I hadn't guessed at, especially once I've gone to the trouble of collecting all the Caches...

I think there's one for completing it, one for completing it on Hard, and one for completing it on Torment.

Well, the Global Achievement Stats list them as Ward, Captain and Commander of Avernum... so that might very well be the case. I really hope not, though... it would be tremendously annoying. Those kinds of achievements should NOT be hidden - I played on a low difficulty just because I couldn't see any reason to go higher, but if I'd known there were achievements for finishing on Torment, I would've played on that instead. 's not like the game is that hard for an old hand anyway...

EDIT: Just finished the game - still got 3 achievements left hidden. So if they ARE difficulty-dependent, the lowest ('Ward of Avernum') must be for beating it on Normal or something, rather than just winning on any difficulty...

If you're interested in playing it again to get those, there's apparently a fan-made mod[spiderwebforums.ipbhost.com] which significantly reworks the battle mechanics by rebalancing/reworking the weapons, skills, disciplines, and spells.

The story would be the same, and unlike Geneforge and Avadon there aren't that many meaningful story choices to make, but a new playthrough with different characters, a differently balanced combat system, and much higher difficulty could be worth it for those extra three.

Also, for what it's worth, the developer liked it enough to import a lot of the changes from the mod into the 2nd Avernum remake.

Doesn't using a mod disable achievements? For that matter, what 'bout the Character Editor? I ignored it during my previous run, but if I'm gonna try again on the highest difficulty, it's gonna be awfully tempting... >_> Not to mention quite nostalgic - I got a LOT of fun out of the Editor back when I played Exile as a kid. :tgrin:

Well, either way, I think I'll save the second run 'till later - first, I've got all of Crystal Souls to revisit. Wash your neck, Garzahd - I'm coming your way! :Raider:

i want to second blackdragon.
jeff said times and times again that difficulty should not hinder people to enjoy story, yadda yadda...
he says that it is not a dishonor to lower difficulty, you should not hesitate , you will appreciate it more..
and yet, at the same time, makes it the ultimate dishonor by niot allowing you to earn achievements, which basically represent your online honor (for wjhat its worth).

oh: somrthing he said about difficulty:

funny to see that avernum eftp has ten times more of what he said he would never put in again.
(difficult fights). probably becasue tahts what hardcore fan wants. and you know what they want? having a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ achievement for playing on torment, and not being cheated of it.
