Oh, and one more thing: third one has not been released yet, though you can buy the original one from Spiderweb Software's website. This and Avernum 2: Crystal Souls are remakes of the original Avernum series games, which themselves are remakes of Exile series (except for the Avernum 4-6 that were new games).

Ok this is one confusing series

Remade remakes do that.

First there was Exile #: Subtitle (1-3. Blades). Then there was Avernum # (1-6, Blades). Now there's Avernum #: Subtitle (1-2 so far).

The remakes are considerably nicer upgrades to the original first 2. There will also be a remake of 3. I believe 4-6 already have the updated graphics etc.
Avadon :vs: Avernum

Two totally seperate series?

Yes.

Same engine as this game I think though, used just a bit differently.
This is why I asked:

Avadon
Avadon 2: The Corruption
Avernum: Escape From the Pit
Avernum 4
Avernum 5
Avernum 6

Unless Avernum 1 and 2 are not on Steam (and thus ARE their own games), then I would be led to believe that Avadon precedes Avernum;
I am pretty sure (but not FOR sure) that I read somewhere that the two series are interrelated; perhaps same universe but different storyline?
(On that note, is Geneforge its own game? Lol I see no connection between Avadon/Avernum and Geneforge, but now I'm gettin' to questionin')

EDIT: Oh shirt! From the store page: "Avadon 2: The Corruption is a huge, indie fantasy role-playing adventure, the second chapter in the epic Avadon trilogy." So... where is Avadon 3?

Avadon 3 is upcoming. It's the next title they are working on, coming in a year or two.
k. So either Avernum is Avadon; part 2 -- Avernum 1 and 2 are just not on Steam -- Avernum is like Star Wars, last episodes first. *headache*

It's not like that. Exile 1, 2 and 3 came first. Then they remade them into Avernum 1, 2 and 3, then made a new trilogy of 4, 5 and 6 with that style. Then they remade 1 and 2 and released the remakes on Steam. 4, 5 and 6 had already been released on Steam.

I don't think Avadon has any significant connection to Avernum. There's an empire in both games, but the setting and the world is different. I'm basing this on the fact that to my knowledge there are no Nephilim (from Avernum) in Avadon.

To play the games in the chronological order, play Avernum: Escape from the Pit first, then Avernum 2: Crystal Souls and then wait for Avernum 3: The Ruined World to get released (in 2 or 3 years). After finishing that, play Avernum 4, 5 and 6 in the number-order.

Avadon is, to my knowledge, totally distinct from Avernum. To play those in right order, play Avadon first, then Avadon 2 and then wait for them to release Avadon 3 in 1-2 years.

I should probably just make a guide out of this if one does not exist yet - it's causing way too much confusion for what really isn't complicated.

As I read it:
Exile 1, 2, 3
Remade into Avernum 1, 2, 3
Avernum 4, 5, 6 (on Steam)
Re-re-made Avernum 1 and 2 and released them on Steam
Avernum 3 and Avadon 3 have yet to be released

For sake of clarity

The reason it's complicated is because every game looks the same - Spiderweb is over 20 years old - Apparently Avadon was originally released in 2011 (that could easily confuse some people; what, was Exile/Avernum one of Spiderweb's first series and then Avadon came, totes unrelated?) - Avernum is getting chopped up and games that preceded ones that are already on Steam... are being released afterwards.
Technically, it isn't really complicated.
Sure looks it though.

Yes, I agree it does look complicated despite not being so technically. It probably remains so until the third ones get released.

Yeah. Spiderweb has been releasing approximitely one game a year for the last 20 years. The engine keeps evolving, but the only major jumps were the flat->isometric conversion when Nethergate was released in 1999. He's previously said something like after releasing a game, he spends some time improving the engine, then starts on the next.

There's a full timeline of all game releases, in order, here: http://www.tiki-toki.com/timeline/entry/142277/Spiderweb-Software-Timeline
