Ridiculous Spider cave
I've recently encountered a cave with a talking spiders. Ruins all the immersion of the game. It just doesn't fit into the lore - the spiders who talk like children/sing songs/are too shy to talk. Really? It was the writing that kept me playing and now this. Seriously thinking of dropping the game now.
Any thoughts on why the developer even put it there?

For the lulz I think. Neat, huh? ;P

Honestly, I have never seen him explain the spiders. But they have been in the series forever, so he'd be silly to remove them this iteration.

I find them amusing. Each to their own.

I thought it was great. It might have cured my arachnophobia :)

Spiders are otherwise a really tired monster archetype used in almost every rpg. This, however, was a first.

As I said it just breaks the immersion. Really unfortunate for otherwise great story

Theyre not really part of the story, but rather the game world.
Why does it break immersion though? Talking spiders is too odd for a fantasy setting?

RL spiders are shy. And if they could talk, they probably would talk like children, at best ^_^
When they call you 'cute' and kiss your legs... Thats just comical relief. Ridiculous to some, like Jar Jar Binks.

Consider killing them!

That is a reasonable advice. Will definetely think about that
There was some lore I ran into when i played blades of exile, apparently there was an experiment to circulate communication magically between the humanoid races and animals, yet many animals weren't magically attuned. Yet, after countless searching, a certain breed of spiders that were able to absorb magic were found. After some experimentation, it artificially enhanced their intelligence to the point where they could learn and speak the language, somewhat.

Keep in mind this is like +10 years ago so I can't remember the full details.

Did you think Avernum was going to be an entirely serious game? Cause it isn't.

This hearkens back to the original exile series... and yes, in blades of exile, the ridiculous talking spiders are explained. I don't know if that explanation ever made it into any of the remakes.

By the way, exile was definitely not a serious series. I distinctly remember many hilarious books you could read in the libraries. Including one about a crazed mutant squirrel chasing a half naked buxom lady. The series has gone a bit family friendly since those shareware days. :)

Don't forget X and his quest to develop a spell that drops anvils on his enemies.

Sorry OP but it wasn't your immersion being broken, it was your autism being triggered

I think you're being a bit ridiculous, and the joke is going over your head. Just ignore the cave and move on..why would you quit a game you admit you love other than this ONE CAVE?

Like other people have said, talking spiders have been around pretty much forever. And if you think theyre bad, wait til you see the talking.... no. I wont, if avernum 3 is out next, you'll find out for yourself :)

That's interesting. I just met some wizard in one of the first towns (in Formello, I believe?) that was talking about slowly succuming to madness and spiders, talking spiders...
