cheat console . ..
i had to enable the cheat mode console because I killed athron , not knowing that 19 hours later, i would need to learn critical information from him . . .

if you want to see the relevant info, just read what's in between the asterisks, the rest of this is just me going all Andy Rooney about it

****
the issue I'm reporting is that everywhere I go, online says to hit CTRL-D to open the cheat console.
I first had to click "character editor" and enable the character editor to allow me to access the cheat console.
and the message that pops up says "hit CTRL-D"

and I go in the game and i'm hitting CTRL-D
CTRL-D
CTRL-D
CTRL-D
CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D
CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D CTRL-D
and it's not working

then on a whim, i try SHIFT-D....and it works!

so...EVERY reference to the game says the command is CTRL+D, when in reality, it is SHIFT+D!
wtf
*****

mainly, I had to do it to input the cheat code ikilledathron
which i had to go to gamefaqs message board to learn it.

I mean, first of all, that's a flaw there, that you can break the game and make it unwinnable for killing a dragon which looks like it was put there for you to kill it but then it turns out is an "essential NPC"

there should be some sort of warning in game.

meanwhile, that the dev obviously must have known bout this game breaking bug and that's why he put that cheat code in.

I mean, the game leads you to believe that it "Wants" you to kill athron, taunting you with Athron's hoard, then warning you that athron will try to kill you if you go in there but then you go in anyway and athron gets po'ed and you're like,"oh crap" but then they generously provide you with a secret passage to sneak out of the hoard without having to fight athron.

but then the game punishes you 25 hours later, when you learn that athron has a piece of a password and you go back and he tries to kill you anyway

but couldn't he have just as easily, like..I dunno, put a tome in the dragon's hoard that you can read to gain the critical piece of info?
rather than having to create a secret cheat code to undo the damage of putting your game into an unwinnable state?

Strange. In-game I see that it says to type Shift+D. A screencap for proof:

Incidentally, I wrote a cheat code guide for Avernum 3 and there I have also written Shift+D, so it appears to be consistent. Of course, there appears to be no cheat codes guide for Avernum 1. Maybe someone should cook one up.

Only when googling for the cheat codes do I find a page (from that very gamefaqs) that incorrectly references Ctrl+D.

lol, I actually agree, that would've worked just as well, while circumventing the problem. Perhaps there was another reason why he preferred doing it like that instead.

well, i just went in and looked again and it says "Shift+D"

but i could have swore, at the time of writing this, it said CTRL+D,

a Mandela Effect?

I dunno.
I beat the game just now, on normal. have every cheev except beating it on hard and torment, not sure i want to play through again...

especially because I have avernum 2,4,5(and 6 on my ipad which i actually finished last month),avadon 1 and 2, nethergate, genforge 2,3,4,5, to play through

and if those take anywhere near as long as this one took, I'll be busy for months

I see part 3 is available now for $20 but with all these others to do, i don't really "need" to get that one right now
