Do you have to play Red Matter 1 to understand 2?

Really disappointed with VR games in 2022 - but I keep hearing fantastic things about Red Matter 2 and want to give it a shot. Before i start, is this a fresh story or continuation or Red Matter 1?

It's a continuation. You play as the same character... sort of and references are made to the first game's story. I don't think someone would be totally lost though if they just got the 2nd game, but you should just get both, as the first is really good, too.

I agree. Its been long enough that I totally forgot the story of the first game. I am about 4.5 hour into this and I haven't felt the need to look anything up from the original game.

No you don't need to have played RM1, but it is a good game in its own right. There are references to the first game but they're generally explained by your 'radio person' so you can get along fine not having played RM1.
