They 3D rendered characters and used in-house software that then rendered these models ar a very small, pixelated scale.

The main benefit is, that it's much faster than doing traditional, hand made pixel art sprite sheets. But it's usually not what Inti is going for stylistically.
Probably I expect better solution like Into The Breach, Dead Cell those
