My gamers OCD prevents me from playing with a fleshy hero with the robotic Sowers, or anything but a Horatio hero for their totally non-inclusive faction. Also, being able to have a Craver hero before you've discovered the Cravers doesn't make a lot of sense. Hopefully they tidy this up with ES2.
It's sad, but I have not found anything similar, no option, no mod... It is unfair and challenging playing without heroes, but it is not very inmersive using this kind of mixtures in a faction oriented game.
*** Update ***
I've been reading a bit about this "problem". Seems that there is no elegant option to get only heroes from your faction, but I've found a workaround (already discovered by others, I've just put the pieces together). Must say that after reading the heroes background I've discovered that they are really mercenaries, cast away from their faction for one or other reason, and looking for sponsorship, so, at the end, I do not find so weird having a craver commander, improved by "the dust" to the point of being able to think by its own, leading my army againts a craven homeworld. Is it ironic?
Whatever, here is the said workaround, in case you want to try it:
1- Edit one of the xml files of the game: <steam path>\steamapps\common\Endless Space\Public_xp1\Simulation\EmpireDescriptor.xml
2- At line 120, change the value from 50 to 1 to get a new heroe every turn if your academy has any free slot: <SimulationObjectPropertyDescriptor Name="TurnsBeforeNewHero" Value="1"/>
Note that there is another EmpireDescriptor.xml in another path, but this is the correct one. That lets you discard any unwanted hero to get a new one in the next turn, that means having a faction commander quite soon.
Hope that trick make you come back to this great game.
Best regards!.
