Heroes - Faction Specific?
I was hoping heroes would be faction/race specific. I've had the game for a long while now, but have been challenged by the simple fact that I keep restarting the beginnign of each campaign until I get three human heroes in my academy slot to begin with. It's strange to me that an amoeba for a human faction would be considered a hero to the humans.

Anyway, I see that hasn't changed with Disharmony. Does anyone know if there is a way to mod this.

I can't say if it can be changed through moding or not, but since it seems it's the "hero" aspect of those characters that bothers you, does it help to know that what they actually are are mercenaries?

Mercenary. Hero. An option for faction specific heroe-mercs would drastically change the game for me. If I wanted amoeba's in my army, I would have played as the amoeba faction. This might sound crazy, but it's the only reason I don't keep returning to the game to play.
In the Endless Space Universe, heroes are individuals altered by contact with Dust and are so rare and powerful that any race will hire them (except for The Harmony) regardless of where they originally came from. It makes enough sense to me and it seems silly for it to bother you too much. If it does, you new Harmany faction in the expasion can't hire heroes at all, so problem solved.

I realize this post is old but you are right OP. It's poor design and completely breaks any sort of immersion by having a hated enemy faction of polar ideology as your hero. It's silly. They have this option in AOW3 which is great. Too bad they never implemented something so simple. At least have the ability to swap out unwanted heroes for another when they become available...again like in AOW3.

My gamers OCD prevents me from playing with a fleshy hero with the robotic Sowers, or anything but a Horatio hero for their totally non-inclusive faction. Also, being able to have a Craver hero before you've discovered the Cravers doesn't make a lot of sense. Hopefully they tidy this up with ES2.

Thanks Phantus. I quit playing the game because the role playing aspect with heroes became encumbersom.

Yeah, that's something that bugs me a little along with the duplicate random factions (which is not something I am aware of in any other 4X). It would be nice to at least have some options about how you want that to occur. Hopefully that will be addressed in ES2.

Some heros should have an increased chance of appearing for a faction, like the endless hero should have a higher chance to appear for the pilgrims or showers since said factions would be actively seeking out said hero.

I wish heroes were specific to their race. Hence, heroes. They are heroes to their people.

I used a set from a UE game to start a Horatio game. I started with Gladios in the UE game, but not in the Horatio game. The map was identical (at least the first few turns).

I agree with dajarvi, come here looking for an option or something that solve this "problem" (as I am fighting against a race with a fleet commanded by a hero of my enemy race? make not sense... not for me. Mercenary? well, maybe with humanoids races, but that is not valid for others..).
It's sad, but I have not found anything similar, no option, no mod... It is unfair and challenging playing without heroes, but it is not very inmersive using this kind of mixtures in a faction oriented game.

*** Update ***

I've been reading a bit about this "problem". Seems that there is no elegant option to get only heroes from your faction, but I've found a workaround (already discovered by others, I've just put the pieces together). Must say that after reading the heroes background I've discovered that they are really mercenaries, cast away from their faction for one or other reason, and looking for sponsorship, so, at the end, I do not find so weird having a craver commander, improved by "the dust" to the point of being able to think by its own, leading my army againts a craven homeworld. Is it ironic?

Whatever, here is the said workaround, in case you want to try it:

1- Edit one of the xml files of the game: <steam path>\steamapps\common\Endless Space\Public_xp1\Simulation\EmpireDescriptor.xml

2- At line 120, change the value from 50 to 1 to get a new heroe every turn if your academy has any free slot: <SimulationObjectPropertyDescriptor Name="TurnsBeforeNewHero" Value="1"/>

Note that there is another EmpireDescriptor.xml in another path, but this is the correct one. That lets you discard any unwanted hero to get a new one in the next turn, that means having a faction commander quite soon.

Hope that trick make you come back to this great game.

Best regards!.
