Disappointment
Freedom Force was one of the best superhero games ever made, and seems to have been largely forgotten to time. Part of what made it so good was that it nailed with pinpoint accuracy the overall style of a specific era of comics, both story and art.

A PC Gamer article on this game showed up in my feed, and mentioned Freedom Force, and I literally sat up in bed and turned on a light to better read the rest of the article my interest was so piqued. Bronze Age comics era? Getting a little more darker and political? Oh man, what does this game look like, I'm THE target demographic!

I'm not sure I can adequately describe how deeply disappointed I was to see the first screenshots and hear the story synopsis. Yet another generic dystopian setting. Concept art that uses the generic early 2000's TCG art style every single indie game uses instead of being inspired by... you know, actual Bronze age comic artists. In game models that barely have any visual identity at all. Everyone is either dressed like a Heroforge default model or has a mildly themed hoodie instead of... you know, anything that looks like a superhero. It's like every screenshot and video and character design is visually constructed to specifically make my eyes glaze over.

I genuinely hope this game is a success enough to actually make a spiritual successor to Freedom Force, though I will not be contributing to that success. When it happens, please direct your art team to... actually mimic some era appropriate comics and set it in a normal city in the 70's. Leave the dystopias at home.

Like a typical Fanboy haven't even played the game and already think it's going to be trash. This isn't a AAA game.

I'll bet you didn't know that the devs actually worked on Freedom Force and so did Ken Levine 😜

They're not a lot of Superhero games out there.
Midnight Suns bombed. So that leaves us what? DCUO , City of Heroes 😂 IMO the only good "Superhero Game" out there is SR4 😜

So go play Freedom Force and stop acting ENTITLED 😡

I did know all of that, that's why I'm so disappointed. I have no idea if it's going to be "trash", I just know that this visually missed the mark so completely and utterly hard I actually can't bring myself to care about this. It takes way, way more than people just having some powers to be a "superhero" game. I truly hope you enjoy it when it comes out, but I see nothing here for me and I was a huge FF fan.

I definitely appreciate the time you've taken to articulate what you feel is missing from the art style with the inspirations being the comic era we're drawing from. I think a game in that style would be AMAZING, and agree with your sentiment that it'd be awesome to see a game made in that style.

Thanks for your message, and I'm sorry to hear that Capes isn't the game for you!

+1 this kind just loves to whine and loves waxing grandiloquent on how he's too good for something he doesn't even know he could like. No we don't need another Freedom force it was a great game but leave it as it is and in the past. I don't need dystopian but I still like it I feel it goes with modern times and its not whether it is or isn't its how the sum of its parts are all executed as a game.

PCGAMER gave it a 80%. very good. I didn't like the demo, but I am willing to try the final game.

I know what I like and this isn't it. This is a generic turn based game with tactics with some strategy thrown in. Now if I was able to create my own character, then that would be something. But why should I care about a bunch of no name Superheroes 😂

Freedom Force was indeed a gem of a game in a dearth of well done super hero games.

Lets hope Capes and if it does well, it's dlcs and follow ups can help to eventually revive the Genre enough in the tactical RPG arena to help bring about the next Freedom Force!

Just FYI, Troubleshooter: Abandoned Children is a superhero game, and it's amazing. :dogandbone:

And they swore and swore that they had total artistic freedom... they sued
https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44858017-Sweet-Baby-Inc-detected/
Forcing their game to be removed from the list of games where SBI has intervened... In the end they added it back after the credits were made public.

They are not just making political propaganda.
They have shown themselves to be hypocrites and liars.
I miss freedom force, i tried to run it a few years back but it doesnt work well on newer pcs.
Its hard to belive that the jaky games on the 2000s are masterpieces now.
I dont understand why its hard to copy a fun gameplay loop and leave politics out of it.
Picking up a car and throwing it at someone is hilarious. The heros were also pretty funny, especially minuteman
