I could go on and on and gush about this game but instead I reccomend you should play this game for yourself, so you can experience one of the best Superhero Games to date.
hands down!
Insomniac's Spider-Man games are excellent, too. Getting to swing around the city for the first time was awesome. Shout-out to Spider-Man 2 (2004) as well because the swinging in that game was mechanically fantastic.
Ultimate Spider-Man was another kick ass Spidey title. Loved playing as Venom.
X-Men Origins: Wolverine was made at a time when licensed games were typically terrible and was far better than anyone expected. A lot of fun.
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction was another one I had a blast playing. Using cars as boxing gloves was so cool at the time.
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy was a bit underrated, I think. Solid gameplay, but where is shone was the character dynamics and writing.
Injustice 2, because punching Superman in the face is never not fun.
Oh, and Batman Returns on the SNES.
I don't think there's a real lack of good superhero games around. We've got quite a few good ones. With that said, I was always baffled that Marvel didn't really push games when the MCU was doing so well. You'd think they'd want to capitalise on their success. Likewise, the Batman games being dead for nearly a decade while Rocksteady worked on Suicide Squad was a huge letdown.
This is a strong contender, though it somewhat toes the line for "superhero game," given your characters' powers are more like low-tier ESP than classic superheroes. There are like three of them whose primary power is "Shoot Gun" for instance. Great game though.
Freedom Force was a nice set of games.
Arkham Batman games were mostly good but a distinctly different feel.
The mostly dead-on-arrival Marvels Avengers wannabe MMO had surprisingly good combat and several of the characters were fun to play, but it was ruined by a miserable campaign, the other characters handling like garbage, and skin-deep RPG mechanics that were just a pointless grind.
I'm going to second that. Freedom Force was an absolute gem.
Both are different enough from typical capeshit, Saints Row 4 by virtue of being parody, while Troubleshooter by being from Korean company relatively untained by DC and Marvell influence.
It's an older game (from 2002-2004) and it's a damn shame they only made the original and a sequel. They could have easily cornered the market on super-hero RPG's over the next decade if they had kept up with the series and brought it into the Silver and modern ages.
The community that cropped up around the game 22 years ago is still alive and kicking: https://www.freedomreborn.net/forums/index.php
Warning: Do NOT buy the original game on Steam. It simply doesn't work, and Valve has refused to update the game files. Get it from GoG. FFvTTR, however, does appear to work fine with Steam. (I'd probably still get it from GoG, though.)
I'm not that much of a super hero fan generally, I don't care for any game where you can only play as a single super hero unless you can develop your own.
I have played some other games here and there too, and I tend to prefer either fighters or where you control a team of super heroes that you can switch out.
I'd really like to see something between X-COM and Midnight Suns where you get to create and customise your own team of super heroes, develop their powers, name them and all, maybe give each a weakness too, their kryptonite so to speak.
And that they can actually die.
