Is there a reason to build the metal shelves? They are huge, and only hold 30 iron scrap, which is 3 stacks. I'm assuming the wood rack works the same way. (I may be remembering the exact item name wrong.)

In fact is there any reason to build any storage other than the metal barrels? Those have the same 5x5 storage space but only cost 6 scrap, making them much easier to build than the other options.

i came looking for the same information. Cuz right now it just looks like its more for RP sake not function at all. And most of the storage options are exactly the same why build most of them?

They're de facto decoration. The only reason to build them is if you think they look good for your build. Maybe 1 or 2 of them for decoration and the vastly better storage options for actual storage.

Boxes stack better and are smaller, so an array of storage boxes takes up less space than the same amount of storage space in metal barrels. Which is better depends on whether space or scrap iron is the priority.

I have built a couple of other storage items for aesthetics and organisation. I have a couple of fridges for storing food and a toolbox for storing tools. I might make a safe for rare items, maybe.

Yeah that's pretty much my thought as well. Although I do seem to recall they tweaked the build costs in the update before this most recent one.

I do wish there was more variety though. I like the mechanic of the metal & wood storage shelves, how they gradually fill in the more that's in them, I just think they should hold more than the standard 5x5 container. I wish there was more variety in the different types, in general... capacity, durability, materials (although that last is actually reasonable.) cool would it be if the barrels could hold double-stacked liquids, for example or food storage with an actual reason to store food (other than cosmetic.)

But then, early access and all, seems likely to change more in the future!

They're mostly for RP decoration. They only hold about 30 scrap/wood each when you can put more than that in a box.

i dont craft wood or srap shelf why take less and bigger storage i place wood echest cna place more in and can stack eahc other then and take less place if can take scrap shelf / wood sehlf more in chest iwant build them /craft but actualy for me there are useless :)
need more place cant stack them and can storage less , only effect looks ok if build them but not realy worth it actualy
my idea were do youcan stack way more in the shelf wood and scrap as in another storage together you know what i mean :) like 100place in sehlf storage fpor scrap and wood but another can only stack 5 in eahc storage then will be worth craft them as only small chest :)
but then another people cry why is to less, in general can be hard balance this i think but take in chest and stack is actualy way better and dont need many place for it as the shelfs self and have less storage place ^^

If you look at each item in the menu you will notice the health is different than other types of the same item, so basically you still get the same amount of storage but have better durability from attacks, same with racks.

Just for decoration is ridiculous. But I love this game I just hope it fills it's own boots properly.
