Football Manager 2013 Regen Dates
What value do you get out of knowing the dates? Knowing exactly when regens appear in-game allows you to scout a specific country around that time and pick up the best youngsters before any other clubs. It also means you will be able to get them for free as they will still be on youth contracts.
What are Regens?

Regens or regenerated players are randomly created players in Football Manager that will start to appear in your save as time goes on. They are created to make sure there is no shortage of players when the real players retire throughout the years. Just like there are some world class real players (Messi, Ronaldo etc), regens are no different and there will be a lot of regens who will become superstars, this is your chance to pick them up early.
The Football Manager 2013 Regen Dates

Regens are spawned in every country, but I recommend just scouting the major countries on their respective dates. The likelihood of a wonderkid coming out of El Salvador? Unlikely, but Brazil or Holland on the other hand….

Enjoy.
Step one:

The best thing to do is start off very, very basic, set the formation depending on your squad strengths and depth and the players you have at your disposal, study their stats and their PPM's (player preferred moves) and what player roles they perform best in as these all impact what the player does on the pitch.

You can't have your winger, for example Valencia, who is an old fashioned winger having the PPM's:

shoots from range

cuts inside (you want him to hug the touchline)

You do not want the PPM's counter acting what instructions the role has given him to perform or what you have instructed him to do manually...

I suggest using the TC when you start, it's much easier and will only take a few minutes of your time...

Raikan007's FM13 Tactical Guide for beginners-manchester-united_-tactics-overview.png

Step two:

Once you have decided on a formation that best suits your team and your players the next part of the process is setting up your

Playing Style:

Raikan007's FM13 Tactical Guide for beginners-untitled.png

this dictates what system you want to adopt, a rigid approach is best suited to smaller teams while fluid is best suited for teams with good players as the more fluid the system the more the players push out of their zones which can be detrimental at times..

So if you are playing with a lower league team I suggest a rigid/balanced approach

If you are a top team or good team, a balanced/fluid approach is best

Once you have decided which approach to use, the next stage is deciding on your actual Team Instructions, the type of football you want your team to play, do you want to replicate Ferguson or Guardiola?

Before deciding on your approach (keeping in mind the type of players you have at your disposal) I suggest checking out this very, very useful screen to help you decide!

This can be found under Report - Team Comparison

Raikan007's FM13 Tactical Guide for beginners-manchester-united_-report-comparison.png

This is a useful indication of how your team fare against the rest of the league and where you could look at improving as well.. its a great tool to keep an eye on!

If you want to adopt a Possession style Guardiola/Swansea approach, I suggest reading my Possession hints and tips guide below:

Fm13 Possession tactic discussion thread by Raikan007

This would be a good base for a possession based tactic:

Raikan007's FM13 Tactical Guide for beginners-manchester-united_-tactics-overview-2.png

This would be a good base for a quick attacking based tactic:

Raikan007's FM13 Tactical Guide for beginners-manchester-united_-tactics-overview-3.png

and so on and so forth...

Next part of the process of creating the tactic is the

Player Roles:

Raikan007's FM13 Tactical Guide for beginners-1.png

this is one of the most important parts of the setup, this can either make your tactic work or get you beaten 6:0 by some lower league club you have never heard of...

I suggest, as in step one, studying your players stats and checking their reports to find out what role suits them the best! This can be found on their reports page on their profile..

Raikan007's FM13 Tactical Guide for beginners-abel-hern-ndez_-reports-coach-report.png

Next in the process is deciding on their duties,

Player duties:

Raikan007's FM13 Tactical Guide for beginners-2.png

Decide from the above what you want each player, in each position in the formation in each role to do, attack, defend, support.. Roles such as Advanced forward, Trequirista and Poacher only have attack duties.

This part of the process is extremely important and I highly suggest taking the time and thinking about what you want each player to do on the pitch..

Do you want your Target man to support your poacher upfront or are you playing with a single striker TM, then setting him to attack as your leading front man..

Are you playing two defensive type mids behind your attacking mid, set him to attack to push forward etc etc etc.. you get the idea

The next part of the process is selecting your

Strategy:

Raikan007's FM13 Tactical Guide for beginners-3.png

I suggest clicking on each strategy and reading the explanation of each one to decide on what best suits your players and your team..

If you are a smaller team in the league, counter or defend would be the best approach as you want to try and soak up the pressure then hit them on the counter and hopefully grab a 1:0 win or sit back and defend...

This needs to be married with your formation and playing style, literally all the other steps so far in the process to really get the best out of your tactic and players!

You are not going to be playing a 4123 and adopt a defensive strategy as a third of your squad are strikers.. be logical about it...

Step three:

Set Pieces regime, there are so many different settings to be used, depending on what approach you have (if you are wanting to counter, leave your two quickest players forward with your best passer of the ball on the edge of area so if and when the ball gets cleared, he will pass the ball quickly up to your players to try and start the counter)

As I said, there are numerous settings to be used, the basic ones are as follows:

Attacking:

(Corner aim: Near post)

Tallest, biggest defender: Challenge keeper

Second biggest defender: Stand far post

Striker: Attack near post

Other players: Near post flick on, attack from deep, attack far post

There are many settings to use, mess around with them until you find the best formula and try and take advantage of your set pieces as they can potentially win you 3 points at the end of the day!
I've seen numerous threads about FM13, ranging from people saying its got harder right through to the conspiracy theories that the games scripted to ensure you lose.

If you are getting whipped in every game, or even if you are just struggling mid table when in charge of utd or city, it's probably about time that YOU admitted defeat instead of blaming the game.

This watershed moment has been coming for a while, there have been signs of it for at least the last 3 editions. It's becoming increasingly difficult to simply accumulate some world class stars, throw them on the pitch and expect results from day one. Especially if you don't properly commit to things like training and tactics, and I mean PROPERLY. This just isn't realistic, look at the first galactico era at real Madrid as an example.

The thing I've also noticed is people moaning that they hit the wall after a certain number of games. Ie they have a string of good results then bang it's like their tactics no longer work. 90% of these people are in charge of a big team. Surprise surprise this is just the game becoming ever more realistic.
Barcelona aside, how many top teams play exactly the same way every week? If they did then the smaller teams know exactly what they can do to attempt to shut the top side out and snatch a draw or even a 1-0 win. Interestingly the people moaning about this 'problem' say they are winning a lot of games 4 or 5 nil and then going on a run of draws or narrow defeats.......

Look to man utd this season as an example. Fergie was using 3 central midfielders and a front 3 that relied on rooney pulling wider. Then he started using the diamond a few games in a row. For the Chelsea game I think everyone expected the diamond, or maybe even the 3 centre mids to combat Chelsea's talented midfield, but no, he goes back to 2 proper wingers and tricks everyone, grabbing a win.

If you are playing a smaller side, the AI is going to try and sit back, hit you on the counter, these possession 'wonder tactics' that have yielded great results against bigger sides won't necessarily work, this isn't a bug, it's realism.

Now I'm not saying the game doesn't have it's fair share of bugs, of course there are problems with this game, just like every FM release before it. But complaining that the AI has worked your tactics out and AI teams are adapting to try and shut your team out (just like real life) or complaining that you just can't get any results with your newly assembled team of world beaters (just like real life) doesn't really make sense.

Personally I'm enjoying the realism and the challenge. Studying how my upcoming opponents are playing and ADAPTING MY TACTICS to exploit their weaknesses is something that seems pretty alien to most FM players. I've been doing it for years with little/no noticeable result. This year finally I can do everything I've ever wanted. My oppositions left back is injured, they have a youngster, unproven at this level who is likely to be the only option. Firstly I talk about him in the media, trying to unsettle him, secondly I put my quickest player with the best dribbling skills on the right wing, thirdly I focus my passing down the right. Boom my winger gets 3 assists in a 4-1 win.

Why play the same way every week if it isn't working? A lot of people seem to think this means scrapping your tactic totally, it doesn't. It means making subtle changes like the one I described. Or maybe moving one of your midfielders to DM, or AMC, or whatever. Trying to anticipate what your opposite manager is going to do to combat your tactics, as well as trying to exploit his teams weaknesses has added a whole new level to the game for me.

So yes I'm still tearing my hair out when a silly match engine bug costs me dearly, but this will be fixed soon enough. In the mean time, I think people should have a close look at themselves before spitting The dummy.

If you don't think you're up to this new challenge called realism, then luckily I have a solution. It's called FM Classic. If you yearn for 'the good old days' when all you needed to do to guarantee a win was name a stronger starting eleven than your AI opponent could muster, and play a semi sensible formation, FMC is for you.
5 Considerations when sending a young player out on loan

This is not my guide, all thanks go to Thomas Levin from FM pundit. I have edited and added to it in parts.

When developing your young players to become the future of you club, you take good care of them while they are in your walls. But one strategy of developing these players quicker is to send them on loan for first team experience elsewhere. Therefore you will want the same level of care given to your players when away from the club. It is a good idea to evaluate the side they are leaving for just as much as you would your own training schedules.

1. Will your player get into the first team?

Gaining first team experience has to be the most important aspect of loaning a player out. If the player isn’t going to get regular time on the pitch then they will be better staying with you, with you controlling how much time the player gets in the first team. Consider where they are going to fit into the squad you send them out too. How good are the other players in comparison to your own? When sending your players out on loan for free you will want something in terms of value back, ie regular game time and a stats increase.

2. Send players to playable leagues

The way that Football Manager works when processing non playable leagues, or those not on full detail is to generate results based mainly on the reputation of the clubs involved to save processing power and keep DB size to a minimum. The lack of detail that the game processes in terms of match data will affect the development of the loanee, so the more detail that goes through each game the better it will be for developing your young players.

3. Training facilities

When sending a player out on loan you will want him to develop much quicker then he would if he stayed at home. Once a young player hits 18 or 19, he will be looking to gain first team experience and quickly accelerate his attributes to push for a first team place with you. The better the training facilities he uses, the more likely it is that his attributes will rise quicker. To send him to a club that has substantially poorer training facilities than you might be counter productive, and he may be better off staying with you.

4. Coaching Staff

You will want to trust that your young players are in expert hands when they are away from the club. Take a look at the coaching staff before you allow the player to leave, the coach calculator ( FM Coach Calculator ) can give you an idea of how many stars they will have in training. It is most important that they have a balanced team of coaches that will allow development in different areas for your young players. But if you spend alot of time developing your own coaching team, you don’t want that time wasted with the young player experiencing substandard coaching elsewhere.
I think that it would be great if you were able to gain friendships and connections with other coaches, interact with them to ask the coach to concentrate on the development of certain areas when training your player. This may work as a real pull factor when you want to loan people yourself, making agreements to take good players on in order to use the expertise at your club, another way coaching could be improved.

5. Affiliation links

It is handy to consider all of the above when looking for feeder clubs for your side. Having a variety of feeder clubs to loan players out to could make it much easier to work in your own player development strategy, by sending players at different levels of ability to clubs in different leagues. If these clubs are able to offer balanced coaching with reasonable training facilities to develop a young player, whilst giving plenty of first team action to him it is much easier to handle your development strategy using affiliations.
Loaning players can be of considerable benefit to the clubs that get an extra player to bolster their squad. But loans should also have a benefit for you, to help squad management and development when looking for long term success.

What do you look for when loaning out your player?

Do you consider the way your player is able to develop at different types of clubs? What do you look for in the loaning teams squad before accepting bids? Please share your tips on loaning players out or discuss the ones above in the comment section below!
