Football Manager 2013

Football Manager 2013

Just to get it off my chest
I bought FM13 almost as soon as it came out and have been tearing my hair out pretty much ever since that point, trying to work out the new tactics and training systems and, more than anything, why my tactics which worked so well in FM12 were suddenly unable to buy a win in this new version, on top of wondering how on Earth the new training system could ever be more useful than the older version.

I've played the FM franchise games since the split from the unmentionable "others" and have loved every installment even more than it's predecessor, so I was loathe to read so many discussions of people whining and moaning about how the game is now too hard, too unrealistic, too realistic etc. etc. While I am by no means an expert at this game, or even a novice, I (like many others) have found myself initially utterly perplexed by the suble nuances of this new installment; my qualms with defensive positioning, misplaced passes, goalkeeper mistakes, seemingly endless problems with squad integration and so on. On top of this, I (like many others) found myself, initially, questioning as to whether this new installment was A)worth the money and B) designed to be completely unwinnable, until two things happened.

Firstly, I scoured these discussion boards and took the advice of those who are, obviously, much better at the game than myself regarding overall tactics, team/individual instructions, PPMs and training, amongst other things, in order to attempt to fix, for example, my terrible defensive line (which, for all intents and purposes might as well have been four sand-bags) and, hopefully, my previously horrendous run of form. I'd made all of the typical mistakes; played players out of a good position-tactic relationship, ignored PPMs, moved the DL out of place, changed my tactics on pretty much a day-to-day basis and anything else you can think of, short of not playing a goalkeeper at all. Pretty much everything that you could get away with in FM12 with little-to-no cosequence if you were in charge of a good enough squad.

The second, arguably more important, thing that happened was that I watched the Premier League for the past couple of weeks more often than I have for years. I quickly realised (especially with Arsenal's 7-3 thrashing of Newcastle yesterday) that the defensive mistakes, the badly placed goalkeepers (especially their near-post mistakes) and the misplaced passes are part and parcel of the whole game; few goalkeepers keep clean sheet after clean sheet after clean sheet, no full-back shuts down a winger for entire games at a time, no centre-back wins every header put in front of him. To see these implemented into a game as they have in FM13, while undoubtedly frustrating, have made the game more realistic than ever. In my opinion. Others have voiced how this makes the game totally unrealistic and some too realistic, but I respectfully disagree. Through implementing new and better tactical/training systems, buying less players straight off the bat in June 2012 etc, I've made these realisms much more managable and find the game just as enjoyable as it's predecessor, probably moreso once I start winning on a consistent basis in 2017. The problems were not the fault of the game, but of my own tactical inadequacies.

As I have said, I seem to have managed to patch up some of the holes in my neverendingly leaky back-four in my Tottenham squad and will continue with this higher level team for a good few seasons, until I have most (if not all) of the kinks worked out of my tactical choices, before attempting to take a lower league side to international glory (where I expect my problems could start all over again, at least for a while).

If you read this, you may find yourself questioning what point there was to this unnecessarily long post and for that you have my apologies. While there is no real ground-breaking epiphany within, I simply wanted to defend a game from frustrated gamers who, like myself, struggled to master the game straight from the word "go", that I thoroughly enjoy. I am still a bit dubious about the new training system, and would prefer the option to use the older, more complex version of training in full Career mode and using the new, less time-consuming, version of training in Classic mode, though I am sure this is something that, at the very least, I could learn to live with.

All-in-all I mean to cause no offence, my views are my own opinion only and not considered to be fact. Haters gon' hate.

A few things i can tell you. Many of the previous tactics around were just tactics that took advantage of the AI in 2012. They call them AI beaters. Players load this up and pretty much dominate and think its realistic. Well the AI is much better here, so you are right. I would say more realistic not less. If you send your players out there all confused with team doing 1 thing and your men doing another you get whacked. Also i find that sometimes you lose to a lower level team, not because the AI sucks but they play a style you are very weak at defending. Simple as that. Check tactics for EACH and every single match

Thanks for the tip! I have found it more difficult against lower level teams and couldn't work out why, e.g I beat City 1-0 at the Emirates, then lost 2-1 to Norwich at White Hart Lane haha. I've got Johan Cruyff as my Assistant Manager and he's scouting all of my opposition in advance. In fairness, he should probably be the manager instead of me!

In my save and am celtic and i have found playing big teams in europe is a lot more easy in this one i think it's because the new AI thinks like real life and my players will be up for it more and the CPU AI will think they will win it easy like you have said you find it harder playing smaller teams.

Try and look foor some other players at the back as well, if you need any lists of good players in a budget let me know i can give them to you

thanks Ivan! I'll definitely look into these at the end of the season. I'm trying to keep the original team in place as much as possible for the first season, I've read that too many new players can upset the balance too much and lead to more bad results. I've currently got Walker, Kaboul, Vertongen and Assou-Ekotto at the back and they aren't doing terribly at the minute, though I'm by no means Walker's biggest fan, nor Assou-Ekotto's. I'm also trying to keep as many English players as I can in the side, so I don't run into issues for Home Grown players in future seasons.

Any of those listed above that you would particularly recommend?

Nice post, Football is a game with passionate fans, but I feel if you come to this game with the same level of passion, you're in for a world of hurt. You need to be very analytical, and sometimes very cold and harsh towards people you hero worship at 3pm on a Saturday.
Spot on with your points regarding the number of mistakes happening in real games - I watch my team (liverpool) at all levels - U18, U19, U21 and ofc the 1st team and I'm constantly seeing bits of play in my game that mirror what I've seen on a pitch or vice versa.

I change max of 5-6 players in the first season, and you can try and sign as many youth as you want, the good thing about the end of season is loads of players get un-happy and you can pick good players up for a good price

like the other poster said Dede, if you have 17 million to spend but if not, get Yanga-Mbiwa he always want to leave for a bigger club you can pick him up for around 6-9 million

Also a really good young centre half is Jores Okore only 19 and is class will only cost you a max of 1.5-2 million

Also there is a CDM called Kara, tromso but he can be trained to a CB and will cost you a max 3.3 million

For right back Sime Vrsaljko - Dinamo, he will cost you around 5-6 million but he is very good and for left back Sebastian Corchia - Souchaux he is young as well but he will cost you around 7-8 million both really good young players

also keep Steven Caulker, he ends upreally good in the game

If you want some really good young english players here is a few i know of

Jack Butland, Birmingham
Alex Smithies, Huddersfield
Jack Robinson, Liverpool
Thomas Ince, Blackpool
George Green, Everton
Ross Barkley, Everton
Mason Bennett, Derby
Adam Campbell, Newcastle
Will Hughes, Derby

they are just off the top of my head mate

Aha thanks Ivan! That should have my scouts busy for a few seasons lol. Yeah, I've taken that route in previous games, get the young guns in at 16 and train them until they get HG status, it's a winner

To be fair mate i have got players in and their stats don't look amazing but they have 7.00 and above every game, i always train young players up and sell them on, look for the regen dates and pick up some cracking young players for next to nothing, train them up and make loads of money on them.

This season i like that players will go in a huff and ask to leave you always end up with a good player for cheap, the best player i see going for nothing is fernando llorente he always says he wants to move.

like the other poster said Dede, if you have 17 million to spend but if not, get Yanga-Mbiwa he always want to leave for a bigger club you can pick him up for around 6-9 million

Yeah, my scouts have told me that Caulker gets good, he makes too many mistakes at the minute though. I've looked into Okore and Kara in previous games and not been too impressed with their consistency, though they are both young. Kyle Walker may just have sealed his fate by playing TERRIBLY against Brighton and giving away a penalty so Sime could be a good call, despite his aggression problems. I've got 20 or so in the bank so I'll look into Corchia-Souchaux or Yanga-Mbiwa
